Evidence of introgression, the transfer of genetic material, between crops and their wild relatives through spontaneous hybridization and subsequent backcrossing has been documented; however, the evolutionary patterns and consequences of introgression and its influence on the processes of crop domestication and varietal diversification are poorly understood.

Plant height (PH) is an important agronomic trait and is closely related to yield in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Previous studies have identified many QTLs for PH. Due to the complex genetic background of PH in soybean, there are few reports on its fine mapping.

Common cutworm (CCW) is highly responsible for destabilizing soybean productivity. Wild soybean is a resource used by breeders to discover elite defensive genes. The transcriptomes of two wild accessions (W11 and W99) with different resistance to CCW were analyzed at early- and late-induction time points. After induction, the susceptible accession W11 differentially expressed 1268 and 508 genes at the early and late time points, respectively.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] Seeds loose viability at a rapid pace under tropical and subtropical conditions. Poor seed longevity in cultivated soybean genotypes may associates with seed size, testa colour and seed coat permeability. Present study aims to understand kinetics of imbibation and evaluate the seed coat permeability in Glycine tomentella, Glycine soja and Glycine max. Out of all 125 genotypes of three species, 20 genotypes of wild annual and perennial species were small and hard seeded.

Studies on soybean GmNAC085 transcription factor revealed that the gene expression in plants was induced by water shortage treatments and its overexpression in the model plant Arabidopsis displayed improved plant tolerance characteristics towards drought stress. In this study, we continued analyzing the biological functions of GmNAC085 using transgenic soybean system overexpressing GmNAC085 gene, by targeting at a number of plant physiological features and biochemical activities in response to limited water growing condition.

Wild soybean (Glycine soja) is a highly adaptive plant species which can grow well in saline-alkaline soils. In soybean genome, there exist about 140 HD-Zip (Homeodomain-leucine Zipper) genes. HD-Zip transcription factor family is one of the largest plant specific superfamilies and plays important roles in response to abiotic stresses.

Cultivated soybean (Glycine max) experienced a severe genetic bottleneck during its domestication and a further loss in diversity during its subsequent selection. Here, a panel of 65 wild (G. soja) and 353 cultivated accessions was genotyped at 552 single-nucleotide polymorphism loci to search for signals of selection during and after domestication.

The DA1 gene family is plant-specific and Arabidopsis DA1 regulates seed and organ size, but the functions in soybeans are unknown. The cultivated soybean (Glycine max) is believed to be domesticated from the annual wild soybeans (Glycine soja).

Successful interspecific hybrids were obtained when we crossed the cultivated soybean with wild annual Glycine soja. Although the success rate was low, whereas, the success rate was zero in case of wild perennial G. tomentella. Probably there is need to improve our crossability skills. Alternately, embryo rescue technique may be employed to recover the hybrids between cultivated soybean and wild perennial species. The hybridity between cultivated and wild annual soybean (Glycine soja) hybrids was confirmed at morphological and molecular level.

Korean wild soybean seeds examined in this study were rich in malonyl-genistin. An increasing trend for total soy-isoflavone content was observed from the north to the southeast in the geographical distribution sites, which signifies the effect of genotype and collection site. The information generated in this report will greatly aid soybean breeding stratagems aimed at improving soy-isoflavone concentration in soybean seeds.

Wild soybean (Glycine soja Sieb. & Zucc.), the progenitor of cultivated soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), is widely distributed in the Sino-Japanese Floristic Region (SJFR). Therefore, it is an excellent model organism to study the effect of Quaternary climatic changes on the distribution and migration of plant taxa in the SJFR.
