Wood hemicelluloses
-
Development of a sustainable bioeconomy requires valorization of renewable resources, such as wood hemicelluloses. The intra- and inter-molecular association of hemicelluloses within themselves or with other wood components can result in complex macromolecular features.

The thermogravimetric method was used to determinate the kinetic parameters as the activation energy, the pre-exponnential factor and the order of reaction. The three constituents of balsa (i.e. hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin) were well identified and the decomposition temperature region well characterized. The presence of a large quantity of water affects the thermal decomposition behaviour of wood inducing notably a maximal degradation temperature.

The effect of chip size on hemicellulose extraction of wood and technological properties of flakeboard were investigated. Three different sizes of wood chips were treated with hot water in a digester at 170 °C for 90 min. After hydrothermal treatment, the wood chips were washed with water and then dried in a dryer.
