Workplace English communicative competence

This study aims at examining how English has been used at work and what industries have actually needed in terms of their staff’s English communicative competence for the current globalization. For these purposes, the research methodology was constructed with the main use of questionnaire survey and interviews with 126 employees and managers from 11 corporates in central Vietnam.

The issue of discrepancies between university English business administration curriculum and English oral communication competence requirements in the workplace has been increasingly alarming since Vietnam accessed into more and more international business organizations, especially ASEAN Economic Community. In the present study, qualitative data were collected in semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in real workplace, consisting of 15 employers at executive and managerial level and 8 business administration graduates from four universities to explore this mismatch.

This emphasizes the necessity of exploring necessary English competencies in oral communication that BA graduates need to work effectively in the demanding market. In the present research, both quantitative and qualitative data were collected in a mixed methods study, in which various sources of participants including BA graduates from Foreign Trade University, Vietnam University of Commerce and National Economics University, and their employers at workplace involved.

In 2007 the number of attacks in Afghanistan’s Taliban- dominated insurgency exceeded that of the previous year, in part because NATO and Afghan forces undertook many more offensive operations. Efforts to improve governance and extend development were hampered by a lack of security in some areas and a general lack of government capacity and competency. The ability of the Karzai government, NATO, and the United States to defeat the Taliban will determine the continued support of the Afghan people for the government and the international community.
