Yield characteristics of potato

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal symbiosis has a significant impact on sustainable growth and development of various plants as they help to acclimatize with biotic and abiotic conditions. A study was conducted to determine the effects of various mycorrhizae based products at different concentrations on yield and quality of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cv. Kufri Sindhuri during Rabi 2016-17 at Vegetable research farm, Department of Horticulture, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, BHU, Varanasi.

The potato is a winter season crop which requires sufficient precipitation during the later crop growth stages. It prefers a loamy textured soil for highest tuber yield due to its high storage capacity, good drainage and other favorable soil characteristics. The potato is very specific in its moisture needs which are met either from the reserve of conserved water in the soil or supplied through irrigation or both.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L., 2n= 4x= 48) is one of the major food crops of the world which can supplement the food needs of any country in a substantial manner. It is a perennial plant of the Solanaceae or nightshade family, commonly grown for its starchy tuber content. Mulching plays a very important role in the potato production. It has numerous advantages, it reduces labour required in cultivation and does not harm the crop.

Efforts to increase crop productivity must also consider global change. Carbon-dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases in atmosphere leads to global warming. Photosynthesis is the single most effective natural regulator of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. It is timely to consider what new opportunities exist in the current “omics” era to engineer increases in photosynthesis.
