  • A trial was conducted during 2018-19 to study the comparative morphology, phenology and productive potential of different plant types in gynodioecious papaya cv. Red Lady Taiwan in South Gujarat. The experiment was laid out in non-replicated trial and consisted of 200 papaya plants. Results indicated a gradual increase in plant height, stem girth, leaf area and number of leaves from July 2018 to May, 2019..

  • Papaya is basically a tropical fruit, which can be grown successfully in subtropical conditions. The fruit has high nutritive and medicinal value especially vitamin A (2020 IU/l00g). It also possesses vitamin B, folate and pantothenic acid besides minerals like potassium and magnesium. Six papaya varieties was evaluated for yield and quality parameters under northern dry zone of Karnataka during May 2015 to January 2016.

  • Papaya is prone to many diseases incited by fungi, bacteria, nematodes and viruses leading to enormous loss in yield. Among all, papaya anthracnose incited by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc. appear to be more severe causing substantial losses to papaya fruits during transit and storage. Papaya anthracnose is the most important disease throughout the year in India and it became a major limiting factor in papaya cultivation.

  • The study was carried out for utilization of papaya fruit cv. Madhu for preparation of foam mat dried fruit powder. The conversion of papaya pulp into foam was optimized by whipping the pulp after addition of glycerol-mono-stearate (GMS) and drying the resultant foam in dehydrator (60±5°C) to constant moisture content. Drying of papaya foam by using 3% GMS results in 11.93 per cent yield and was found the most appropriate with respect to desired foaming properties (foam density, foam expansion and foam stability), physico-chemical as well as sensory characteristics.

  • Blended guava ‘Allahabad Safeda’ and papaya ‘Taiwan Red Lady’ fruit leathers were prepared by blending their pulp at different ratio of 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 50:50, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100 respectively. Acidity at 0.3 % using citric acid and KMS (potassium metabisulphite) at 600 ppm was added to blended pulp and TSS adjusted to 20oB then dried in a cabinet drier at 55 ± 5oC till the desired moisture content (15 % approx.) is achieved. Blended guava-papaya (40:60) leather was found best among other treatments in terms of quality and acceptability. It had a good yield of 26.78 % with 15.

  • Papaya is one of the few important fruits which flowers and yield throughout the year. Though a polygamous species with three basic types viz., staminate, pistillate and bisexual, its cultivation with seed propagation is hindered by problems due to vide variability in sex expression and fruit characters. In such point of view, propagation through asexual method could be a better alternative. The micropropagation will substitute method of propagation by cutting or grafting would be of great boon to papaya industry. The procedure for in vitro propagation of papaya (Carica papaya) cv.

  • Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV) is the most destructive disease of Papaya, responsible for yield reduction of Papaya all over the world. PRSV exhibited different types of symptoms on Papaya plant in the field like ringspot , vein clearing, vein banding, chlorosis of younger leaves, filiformy, shoestring, mosaic, mottling, stunted growth etc. Molecular diagnosis of PRSV was done with the help of gene specific primers through PCR. Gel electrophoresis results show a 300bp clear band which confirms the presence of PRSV in the plants. Sequencing was done and phylogenetic tree was made.
