Research information on response of crops to phosphorus and potassium levels generated very scanty and as such generating further information is very much essential specially in low phosphorus and potassium containing soils to combat the present situation. With this in view, the present study was initiated in low phosphorus and potassium soils to assess the effect of phosphorus and potassium levels on growth, yield and economics of finger millet in Alfisols of Ramanagara district of Karnataka.

An experiment was conducted at Department of Agronomy, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam to achieve enhanced remuneration and profit margin in irrigated finger millet through intercropping and mulching. Among mulching, the highest gross return (Rs.68,336/- ha-1 ) and B:C ratio of 2.16 was obtained in rice straw mulch (M1) which was followed by M2 (shredded coconut waste mulch) with a gross return of Rs.63,635/- ha-1 and B:C ratio of 2.01. Similar trend in net return was observed because of higher crop yield.

Thirty blast resistant lines of finger millet were evaluated in a field study to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and quality attributing traits. The analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences among the entries for all the traits studied.

The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the characters. Studies of genetic variability revealed high phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance as per cent of mean for the traits viz., number of basal tillers per plant, no. of productive tillers per plant, main ear width, grain yield per plant and grain yield per plot indicating simple selection can be practiced for improvement of these characters.

In the changing climate scenario, drought could be continued as a major abiotic limitation for crop productivity. Finger millet although known for its drought tolerance, the drought stress decreases the grain yield from 25 to 100 percent depending on the duration and magnitude of drought stress. Present study was conducted to explore the genetic variability of selected genotypes over the ruling varieties if any, based on the extent of reduction in grain yield, and dependent photosynthetic traits due to moderate drought stress for 18 to 20 days (grand growth to flower primordial initiation).

Field experiment was conducted during summer, 2018 to determine the influence of LAI on yield maximisation in finger millet genotypes by varying plant densities. Maximum grain yield was obtained at the plant density of 44.4 to 66.6 hills m-2 but above or below. The source size (LAI) and source activity (photosynthetic rate) were not the limitations for yield maximisation under optimal irrigation and; LAI of 6.5 to 7.0 was optimum for maximum finger millet yield especially in variety, GPU-28.
