  • A study was undertaken to understand the genetics of yield formation traits in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) germplasm collected from Andhra Pradesh, India that has potential for yield improvement. Thirty five genotypes were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications during late rabi season at the Vegetable Research Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.

  • Cucurbits comprise 117 genera and 825 species. Out of this 30 species of nine genera are used as cultivated plants. Most of the cucurbits viz., cucumber, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, snake gourd, water melon and muskmelons are monoecious and annul in habit. However plants like pointed gourd, spine gourd, ivy gourd and chow-chow are dioecious and perennials. It is of high market demand with a special delicacy for the people of India and it fetches premium price in the market.

  • A study was conducted to assess the extent of heterosis and combining ability of muskmelon in a half diallel mating design. Forty five F1 hybrids and ten inbred lines were evaluated for fourteen different characters during 2014-15 at Department of Vegetable Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The analysis of variance indicated significant variability among all the genotypes for all the traits except fruit weight and acidity.

  • A study of twenty one F1 hybrids of Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) in a half-diallel set involving seven parents showed over-dominance and low narrow-sense heritability for all the characters except node no of first female flower, average fruit weight, first fruit harvest and yield per plant. In all these characters, the dominance component of genetic variance (H1) was higher than the additive component of genetic variance (D) indicating predominance of dominant gene action over additive gene action and commercial exploitation of heterosis for improvement of these traits.

  • The objective of this study was to breed muskmelon hybrids possessing higher TSS, flesh, and rind thickness, early and total yields; lower seed cavity; and resistance to fruit fly. Eight genetically diverse parents viz., Kesar, exotic collections (EC-2, EC-3, EC-4, EC-5), and indigenous collections (GP-210, GP-211, GP-141) were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. The resulting 28 F1's were evaluated with their parents in completely randomized block design with three replications under open field conditions.

  • Hypoxia causes injury and yield loss. Soil aeration has been reported to accelerate the growth of plants and increase crop yield. The aim of this study was to examine growth response of greenhouse-produced muskmelon to 3 levels of sub-surface drip irrigation (I), 3 different installation depths of drip laterals in the soil (D), and 4 levels of supplemental soil aeration frequency (A).

  • Muskmelon crop flourishes well under warm climate for its cultivation and cannot tolerate frost condition, in order to grow muskmelon in irrespective of the season throughout the year and also to get a potential yield an attempt was made the performance of yellow melon var. Gladial, under different growing conditions viz., poly house and open condition at different levels of spacing. With five different treatments for the spacing levels and four replications under both the growing conditions was conducted. The parameters at ninety days after transplanting the longest vine (372.

  • Field experiments were conducted during successive seasons of 2015 and 2016 to study the effect of different sources of organic nutrients on growth, yield and quality of muskmelon var. RM-50. Results strongly showed that the addition of organic manure viz., FYM @ 100 q/ha + vermicompost @ 25 q/ha + biofertilizer (T10) significantly increased the number of vines/ plant at last harvest (4.84), fruit weight (823.97 g), fruit diameter (12.46 cm), flesh thickness (2.20 cm) and marketable fruits/ plant (4.10) which were at par with FYM @ 100 q/ha + vermicompost @ 25 q/ha (T7).
