Yield of paddy in acid soil
-
Iron toxicity and acidity are the major constraints in the laterite derived paddy soils of Kerala. More than 90 % of the midland lateritic rice soils in the northern part of Kerala are strongly acidic in reaction with pH values in the range of 4.5 to 5.5. The content of 0.1 N HCl extractable Fe in soil varied from 52.21 – 414.9 mg kg-1 and more than 50 % of the rice soils showed iron toxicity problem (> 250 mg kg-1 of available iron).

In a pot culture experiment, the response of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cv. Contender to phosphorus (P) was studied on 20 acidic paddy soils of Thoubal district, Manipur. All the collected soil samples were acidic in reaction varied from 4.61 to 6.26 with mean value of 5.48, organic carbon content 9.9 to 24.1 g kg-1 , CEC 9.21 to 35.71 [cmol (p+ )kg-1 ] and clay content ranged from 24.78 to 73.38 per cent. Addition of P fertilizer in the soils significantly increased the dry matter production and P uptake by the crop.

Methylobacterium spp. are a group of bacteria known as pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophs (PPFMs) capable of growing on single carbon compounds such as formate, formaldehyde, and methanol as well as on a variety of multicarbon compounds having no carbon-carbon bonds. They are distributed ubiquitously in the plant phyllosphere and rhizosphere and have been isolated from many species of plants. Methylotrophs are known to play an important role in increasing crop yield and soil fertility.

Effect of basic slag on yield, nutrient status and uptake by paddy in acid soils of Karnataka, India
Soil acidity is an important agricultural problem while evaluating the production potential of most of the crops. A field experiment was carried out at Alasulige village of Sakleshpur taluk, Hassan district, Karnataka to utilize the basic slag as a soil amendment and source of nutrients in acid soil in comparison with lime.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2014, 2015 and 2016 at Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Brahmavar, Udupi district, Karnataka, to study the effect of soil acidity and secondary nutrient management on soil available nutrients and yield of paddy. The experiment was laid out in RCBD design with three replications and nine treatments involving different levels of lime applications and magnesium sulphate in comparison to package of practice as control.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2017-18 at ZAHRS, Bramhavara to study the effect of granulated liming material on soil properties and yield of paddy. Treatments included lime application as granulated lime and agricultural lime at different combinations along with FYM and RDF were studied in this experiment. The results revealed that the treatment receiving RDF (60:30:60 Kg N, P2O5, K2O/ha) + FYM (10 t/ha) + 50 percent lime requirement through granulated lime based on 45 per-cent Ca saturation (1.
