Lentil is a self-pollinated annual diploid (2n = 2× = 14) crop with a restricted history of genetic improvement through breeding, particularly when compared to cereal crops. This limited breeding has probably contributed to the narrow genetic base of local cultivars, and a corresponding potential to continue yield increases and stability.

It has been suggested that traits with low heritability, such as fertility, may have proportionately more genetic variation arising from non-additive effects than traits with higher heritability, such as milk yield.

Wheat mutant resources with phenotypic variation have been developed in recent years. These mutants might carry favorable mutation alleles, which have the potential to be utilized in the breeding process. Plant architecture and yield-related features are important agronomic traits for wheat breeders and mining favorable alleles of these traits will improve wheat characteristics.

In this work, 19 newly introduced and some traditional apricot cultivars were evaluated by 20 phenological and agronomical traits and fruit quality attributes. The results showed a wide variation in phenological data, tree vigour (TCSA), productivity [yield per tree, cumulative yield (CY) and yield efficiency (YE)], and fruit quality attributes such as fruit and stone weight, flesh/stone ratio, fruit dimensions, size, shape index, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA) and ripening index (RI).

Single-cell analysis is a rapidly evolving approach to characterize genome-scale molecular information at the individual cell level. Development of single-cell technologies and computational methods has enabled systematic investigation of cellular heterogeneity in a wide range of tissues and cell populations, yielding fresh insights into the composition, dynamics, and regulatory mechanisms of cell states in development and disease.

Drought is a major environmental disaster that causes crop yield loss worldwide. Metabolites are involved in various environmental stress responses of plants. However, the genetic control of metabolomes underlying crop environmental stress adaptation remains elusive.

Long-read sequencing is promising for the comprehensive discovery of structural variations (SVs). However, it is still non-trivial to achieve high yields and performance simultaneously due to the complex SV signatures implied by noisy long reads.

The three-dimensional conformation of a genome can be profiled using Hi-C, a technique that combines chromatin conformation capture with high-throughput sequencing. However, structural variations often yield features that can be mistaken for chromosomal interactions.

The results indicated that for eggplant improvement, additive variation is of great importance and makes it possible to successfully select better individuals in segregating populations, since the selective gains will depend only on gametic variation. For this reason, backcross, pedigree, single-seed descent or gametic selection methods are recommended for advancing the segregating populations.

PCA revealed overall acceptability, taste and colour as the top three sensory components contributing to variation in the gari samples. Root size negatively correlated with dry matter, starch content and gari yield. It was concluded that the various cassava varieties exhibited some distinct morpholgical and chemical characteristics which influenced their potentials for gari production.

Tomato leaf miner is an aggressive and invasive pest that causes serious damage in tomato production, resulting in up to 100% yield losses during serious outbreaks. The management of tomato leaf miner with synthetic pesticides is difficult due to its leaf mining habit, short life span, high reproductive rates, and insecticide resistance problem. In this study, sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) gene of Tuta absoluta specimens were analyzed and compared with the available COI sequence data members from GenBank.

The study was carried out to evaluate fifty-six accessions/species suitable for industrial purpose. Understanding the bioactive compound diversity among both the shatavari species, Asparagus racemosus (AR) and A. adscendens (AA) are an important species for crop development. Sufficient variation for bioactive compounds (shatavarin IV) were registered in both the species. AR and AA confined average 22.84 µg g–1 and 117.74 µg g–1 shatavarin IV, respectively. The A. adscendens produced about five-folds higher shatavarin IV content as compared to A. racemosus.

Orobanche cumana is a parasitic plant that can lead to advanced losses in yield of agricultural lands cultivating sunflower, depending on the sunflower varieties and the level of contamination. In our study, genetic diversity of six O. cumana populations from the Thrace region of Turkey was determined with the help of eight SSR (microsatellite) loci. All SSR loci were polymorphic. A total of 23 alleles were determined for the analyzed 120 samples. Allele number of each SSR locus ranged from two to six. Mean number of alleles (Na = 2.271), effective allele number (Ne = 1.

The carrageenan quality was done for a 60-day cultivation period, the carrageenan yield and gel strength showed little variation with the higher values (28.1 - 28.7 % and 855 - 935 g cm-2 , respectively) obtained from November 2014 to March 2015 and lower ones (25.1 - 26.7 % and 555 - 758 g cm-2 , respectively) from April to September 2015. The data on moisture content of alga (33.5 - 36.8 %), clean anhydrous algal/salt ratio (0.92 - 1.07), and carrageenan yield obtained in this study fulfilled those of standards for carrageenophytes.

Negative energy balance (NEB) is an imbalance between energy intake and energy requirements for lactation and body maintenance affecting high-yielding dairy cows and is of considerable economic importance due to its negative impact on fertility and health in dairy herds. It is anticipated that the cow hypothalamus experiences extensive biochemical changes during the early post partum period in an effort to re-establish metabolic homeostasis. However, there is variation in the tolerance to NEB between individual cows.

Milk yield for Holstein cows has doubled over five decades due to genetic selection and changes to management, but the molecular mechanisms that facilitated this increase are mostly unknown. Epigenetic modifications to the cattle genome are a plausible molecular mechanism to cause variation in milk yield and our objective was to describe genome-wide DNA methylation patterns in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from mature Holstein dairy cows with variable milk yield.
