Fatty acids are an important energy source, for they yield over twice as much energy as an equal mass of carbohydrate or protein. In humans, the primary dietary source of fatty acids is triacylglycerols. This lecture will describe the metabolism of fatty acids. The two main components of fatty acid metabolism are β oxidation and fatty acid synthesis. Upon completion of this lecture, you will understand that the fatty-acid breakdown reactions of β oxidation result in the formation of reduced cofactors and acetyl-CoA molecules, which can be further catabolized to release free energy.

In the further research and synthesis of hybrid molecules which exhibit highly biological activities, the synthesis of triazole-fused bicyclic heterocycles bearing the benzofuran has been undertaken. A facile, convenient and good yielding synthesis of novel benzofuran-bearing 1,2,4-trazole derivatives were described.

This method is associated with some attractive characteristics such as good selectivity, very short reaction time, high yield of products, cleaner reaction profile,no harmful by-product, cheap and environmental benign catalyst, simple experimental andwork-up procedure. This procedure does not require solvent separation and purification stepssuch as column chromatography.

We report ammonium metavanadate catalyzed one-pot synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrano[3,2- c]chromenes, from aldehydes, active methylene compounds malononitrile and 4-hydroxycoumarin in water:ethanol(1:1) under reflux. The attractive features of this process are mild reaction conditions, short reaction times, easy isolation of products, and excellent yields.

Pentyl 2-(1H-indole-2-carboxamido)benzoate (5) is obtained in good yield as stable crystals by reaction of pentyl 2-amino benzoate (6) with indole-2-carbonyl chloride acid (7) in the presence of pyridine. The crystal structure of 5 confirms the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding (N-H…O) which produces a six-membered ring, and the molecules are linked together by intermolecular hydrogen forces (N-H…O).

Synthesis and characterization of some derivatives of 1,3-Diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene
N-Heterocyclic carbenes are widely used in organic reactions and coordination chemistry. In the present study, 2,3-dihydro-1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (1) is reacted with diphenyl disulfide, methyl phenyl disulfide, and bis(methylsulfonyl)methane to yield target compounds 5, 6, and 7 respectively.

Synthesis of 1, 2-disubstituted benzimidazoles by reaction of N-substituted benzene-1,2-diamine with different aldehydes was developed. This greener procedure proceeds with the help of oxygen in water at 60oC. The advantages of proposed method are catalyst-free conditions in water, short reaction time and excellent yields.

The current study presents the synthesis of thiophene-appended pyrazoles through 3+2 annulations of chalcones 3(a-g) with aryl hydrazine hydrochlorides 4(a-d) in acetic acid (30%) under reflux conditions produced the thiophene-pyrazole hybrids 5(a-g) in good yields.

The octadecaneuropeptide (ODN; QATVGDVNTDRPG LLDLK) and its C-terminal octapeptide (OP; RPGLLDLK), which exert anxiogenic activity, have been previously shown to increase intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca21]i) in cultured rat astrocytes through activation of a metabotropic receptor positively coupled to phospholipase C. It has also been found that the [D -Leu5]OP analog possesses a weak antagonistic activity. The aim of the present study was to synthesize and characterize cyclic analogs of OP and [D -Leu5]OP.

Penicillin acylase of Escherichia coli catalyses the hydrolysis and synthesis of b-lactam antibiotics. To study the role of hydrophobic residues in these reactions, we have mutated three active-site phenylalanines. Mutation of aF146, bF24 and bF57 to Tyr, Trp, Ala or Leu yielded mutants that were still capable of hydrolysing the chromogenic substrate 2-nitro-5-[(phenylacetyl)amino]-benzoic acid. Mutations on positions aF146 and bF24 influenced both the hydrolytic and acyl transfer activity.

This article is devoted to the study of redundancy and yield of salvage pathways in human erythrocytes. These cells are not able to synthesize ATPde novo. However, the salvage (recycling) of certain nucleosides or bases to give nucleotide triphosphates is operative. As the salvage pathways use enzymes consuming ATP as well as enzymes producing ATP, it is not easy to see whether a net synthesis of ATP is possible.
