Young children online

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of online parent training programs for caregivers of young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Five caregivers participated in an online program including lectures, group discussion, and conference with parent mentor. Self-reported scales were used to measure depression, parenting stress, parenting attitudes, and knowledge of behavioral principles.

Given the increasing technological advancement and widespread use of the online resources for education in general and teaching of English as a foreign language in particular, this study is aimed to contribute to this endeavor, with particular reference to young learners. It is an investigation of the syntactic characteristics of the English short stories targeted at children.

The present panorama of communication features the co-employment of language and other semiotic resources. This paper addresses this fledging field, multimodal discourse analysis, by investigating a genre targeted at children. Specifically, it studies how meanings in comics for children are constructed both verbally and visually. The data for the study is one comic - Little Red Riding Hood, which is presented via colored images and verbal texts in English.

SuperClubsPLUS is a supported social networking site for children aged 6-12. While it is evident that children in the 9-12 age group have embraced SuperClubsPLUS with enthusiasm, it is important to consider the 6-8 group working in the space. This age group is likely to become even more confident with the Web 2.0 tools than their older siblings and they are potentially more vulnerable to cyber-safety issues. On the other hand, these children are learning about cyber-safety and cyber citizenship at an earlier age.

Given that social media applications and services have only recently become available, these high usage rates indicate a surprisingly rapid take up among large parts of the European population. These findings are confirmed by a recent IPTS assessment of social computing (Ala-Mutka et al. 2009b) and by figures from other independent sources. Nielsen Online (2009) estimates that, globally, 67% of Internet users accessed social networking sites or blogs in 2008.

A within-subjects analysis was used to reduce any variability that may have been attributed to differences between subjects: thus, each subject’s performance on one layout was compared with his or her own performance on an alternative layout. The practice diagrams and the randomisation of the order of presentation of the experimental diagrams for each subject helped counter the learning effect (whereby subjects’ performance on the task may improve over time, as they become more competent in the task).

Assemble focus groups of patrons and potential patrons to discuss the library’s Web gateway. Since information searching can vary widely, you’ll want to schedule targeted focus groups based on market segment (e.g. parents with young children, young adults, seniors, etc.). Send invitations and follow up by phone until you’ve confirmed at least a dozen people. Have your discussion questions ready (broad, open-ended questions such as “What kinds of questions do you use the Internet to answer?”) and be prepared to demonstrate the gateway and its resources.

How can these differences be explained? Is it a matter of cultural factors operating in specific countries such as peer norms, parenting styles, familiarity with the internet, practices of regulation or other variables? Or, is it a matter of the design and management of the particular SNS that predominates in that country? In The Netherlands, for instance, Hyves is the main SNS but, also, Dutch peer culture (or parenting) may encourage young children to join in social networking.

The NPR news site and the NPR music site have both become known for outstanding quality and usability. Frontline offers its highly respected content as an easily accessible and user-friendly online service.
