The experiment was taken up to elicit the information on performance of different ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) varieties under shade net condition. Ten varieties of ginger were evaluated in RBD with three replications during kharif season of 2015-16 at Horticultural College and Research Institute, Dr. Y. S. R. H. U, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. The growth performance of ten varieties indicated significant variation at all the stages of crop growth under shade net condition.

A field experiment was conducted during 2013-14 and 2014-15 in Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat-13. The objective of the study was to understand the effect of different chemical weed management practices in ginger under different intercropping systems. A total of 18 numbers of treatment combinations were considered, which comprised of 4 inter-cropping systems along with 4 weed management practices and 2 sole crop treatments. Cowpea in between rows of Ginger and incorporated at 40 days after sowing (DAS) recorded better results in terms of weed and crop parameters.

The experiment was taken up to elicit the information on yield attributes and yield of different ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) somaclones. Ten somaclones of ginger were evaluated in RBD with three replications during 2015-18 at College of Horticulture, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur district, Kerala. The growth performance of ten somaclones indicated significant variation at all the stages of crop growth. The somaclones SE 86102 (16.00 days) and SE 8626 (16.33 days) registered least number of days for sprouting.

Thirteen groups of somaclones (seven in Maran and six in Rio-de-Janeiro) were evaluated using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). RAPD analysis using twelve selected primers produced 129 amplicons, 44 were polymorphic with an average of 3.66 polymorphic bands / primer and a polymorphism percentage of 34.10. The dendrograms generated based on RAPD profiles grouped the somaclones into two separate clusters. RAPD marker system showed that somaclones derived from cultivar Maran exhibited more variability than Rio-de-Janeiro.

Viral diseases have a remarkable impact on metabolism of their host plants. Carbohydrate and chlorophyll metabolism are two activities which are seriously affected by viral infections. In the present study, it was observed that the uninfected plants were containing more carbohydrates and chlorophyll than in virus infected plants. A protocol for direct plantlet regeneration from aerial stem explants of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) has been developed. Adventitious shoots and roots were regenerated from in planta aerial stem explants of 2 ginger varieties viz. var. ‘Jamaica’ and var. ‘Varada’. Maximum shoot and root regeneration were observed in the cultures containing TDZ and IBA (1:1; 1:0.1 mg L-1) in both varieties.
