Abstract: Based on Propp's theory, this paper presents the results of a conbastive analysis on 10<br />
English fiiiiy tales and 10 Vietnamese ones ul onter to highhght their layout features as well as the<br />
similarities and dififerences between the two languages in temis of this genie. Approaching the English<br />
and Vietnamese &iiy tales as written texts - the jHoducts of discourse processes, the paper focuses on<br />
identifymg the s^ieciiic (unctions of the objects under stwfy with a view to helping language teachers<br />
and leameis und»stand more about the discourse features of iairy tales in EngUsh and m Vi^namese.<br />
The findings of the study can be applied in researching, teaching and learning the two languages.<br />
