Students that receive an education can then get a better job and help their families. It is amazing that a free lunch can pull whole communities out of poverty! The Really Good School Dinner programme runs every February for one week. Since its beginning in 2009, students in the UK have raised over £28,000, which has bought more than 450,000 meals in the developing world. At the moment, over 300 schools are involved and more are joining each year. So far, the programme has helped children in Afghanistan and those affected by natural disasters such as the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 and the famine in East Africa in 2012. If you want to remember what you learn, teaching someone else may be the place to start. Researchers have found that when you have to explain something to others, you work much harder at understanding it yourself, and the material gets stored more effectively in your memory. As the Roman philosopher Seneca said, “While we teach, we learn.” In a study, Richard E. Mayer, an American educational psychologist, observed two groups of students. One group used the learningbyteaching technique, and one group didn’t. Mayer noticed that students who had taught their peers performed better on a test than the group that hadn’t taught the material to anybody else. This suggests that, in theory, a student 15 who received a C on a test could achieve a B or even an A after learning by teaching. Mayer also found that even students who didn’t actually teach someone else, but merely prepared to do so, also had a chance of remembering more, at least for the short term. Apparently, when a student teaches something, they have to review the material they’ve learned, organize it systematically, and express it in a way that others can understand. By doing so, they internalize and retain the material not only for one exam, but possibly for much longer. Moreover, the study found that teaching others resulted in increased motivation to learn and higher levels of confidence. Another advantage to this method of learning is that it can easily be applied both inside and outside the classroom. In school, teachers can provide opportunities for students to give presentations to their peers. Alternatively, oneonone instruction, a variation which is especially suitable for shy students, can also be used. And this method is just as beneficial when applied at home, where students can teach material to any family member, young or old.
