Social media are currently building their own empire and power since they have great influence in a flat world. They play an important role in the communication of human beings i.e. sharing information and connecting people. Social media have become the main sources of getting latest news and platforms to spread ideas and mindsets. It is therefore essential to know and understand social media’s key vocabulary and terminologies. The paper analyses and synthesizes 100 collected words concerning social media.

Keywords: Social media; terminology; derived meanings; abbreviations 1. Introduction The word now becomes flatter and flatter thanks to the development of social media. They have helped spread ideas and connect people from all over the world regardless of nationalities, races, social or economic status. It is not common today to see people reading newspapers to update themselves but much of our knowledge and news comes from broadcasted programs or e-platforms. Along with that ever- growing, newly invented terminologies and vocabulary concerning social media have appeared in large quantity. Those words may either root from original ones but have new shades of meaning or are freshly invented. In order to catch up with those, we need to learn new words for a better and more thorough understanding. Since the majority of the languages used on the internet are English, this paper introduces a number of new social media terminologies in the English language that we often come across when surfing social networks. 2. Literature review and methods of the study 2.1. Literature review 2.1.1. What are social media? Social media are websites and computer programs that allow people to communicate and share information, thoughts and ideas on the internet using a computer or mobile phone. (Cambridge dictionary). Social media need the internet to run, launch and boost their content and get almost instant feedback or reactions from their audience. There are no boundaries in terms of time and locations in reaching the followers. Hence, social media have served the purposes of politics, economics, communication, entertainment, education, etc, and gained their prominent status. Nowadays, countries often have their e- government on e-platforms to contact their people, artists have their social networks to connect with their fans, businesses have websites to approach their customers, etc. The current most common social media platforms are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, TikTok, Wikipedia, Linkedin, Reddit, Pinterest, etc. Each of them has its strengths, purposes, and ways of interacting with its audience. 2.1.2. What are social media terminologies? Terminologies are the system of terms belonging or peculiar to a science, art, or specialized subject; nomenclature. It is thereby understood that social media terminologies are a collection of words or vocabulary used in websites and social networks with their meanings and implications. A word of daily use can have a completely different meaning in the social media context. That is why knowing and understanding social media terminologies can be a means of obtaining information. 2.1.3. Two types of social media terminologies. There are some criteria to divide social media terminologies according to their functions on each social network, e.g. meanings (original or derived), time (old or newly invented), or forms of words (normal or acronyms).   2. 2.2. The methods of the study The research uses document analysis and synthesis. Around 100 new social media terminologies were collected and analyzed. 3. The results of the study Below are two tables of some representatives of words with derived meanings and acronyms in social media terms. The words with derived meanings may have slightly different meanings compared to their original ones due to the specific characteristics of the social media. The acronyms have smaller quantity and a bit harder to be recognized or understood since they are only the first letters of a group of words. Table 1. It can be a real photo of you, a corporate logo, or anything you want your followers to identify as ‘you’ on social. A short description in your profile that tells people who you are. It’s also 4 Bio (n) a great place to share links to your website or other accounts. Boosted/promoted post A Facebook post whose reach to a specific audience can be raised 5 (n) depending on the money you put behind. Content that uses manipulative copy to convince users to click on it. 6 Clickbait (n) Clickbait tends to rely on exaggeration and withholding information to push people into clicking. Users interacting with a brand by liking, commenting, sharing posts, 7 Engagement (n) images, etc. 8 Feed (n) A generic term for the stream of content you see from other users. A follower is a user on social media who has subscribed to see your posts 9 Follower (n) in their feed. The action of deleting all communication and connect on social media 10 Ghosting (n) after confession of love. Funny pieces of text, videos, or images that go viral and let users get in 11 Memes (n) on the joke by creating their variations and sharing them. A social media metric that tells you how many people have seen your 12 Reach (n) post. 13 Traffic (n) The number of users who visit a given website or page. 14 Trending topic (n) A subject or event that has a sudden surge in popularity on social media. 15 Viral (adj) A term describing content that spreads exponentially on social media. A social media user who has the potential to reach a relevant audience 16 Influencer (n) - large or small - and create awareness about a trend, topic, brand, or product. Impressions are a social media metric that measures how many times your 17 Impression (n) post has been shown in users’ feeds. A person who always comments something negative on social media 18 Troll (n-v) posts in order to get reactions from others. A person who always comments something negative on social media 19 Hater (n) posts without any purpose. Someone who uses the internet to harm or frighten another person, 20 Cyberbully (v) especially by sending them unpleasant messages. 21 Phishing (n) Creating relationships online then do scams when they have gained trust. 22 Fanbase (n) All people who are your fans. 23 Crowdfunding (n) Calling for money to do projects or inventions. 24 Scam (v) Try to get money from people by creating false miserable stories. 25 Bitmoji A Bitmoji is an avatar or emoji that users can create to look like them. 1338

Fan-created content promoting a brand 10 UGC because they will attract their friends on social media platform’s concerns. (Search Engine Optimization). Improve the volume or quality of unpaid traffic to your website from search engines. This increases 11 SEO the chances of your website appearing near the top of search engine results pages (SERPs). (Search Engine Marketing). An online strategy to attract customers, 12 SEM generate brand awareness and, build trust and loyalty. (Share Of Voice). Percentage of social media posts in a given 13 SOV category. Brands use SOV to find out how their popularity ranks against their competitors. (Social Media Analytics). Scraping online conversations to find actionable insights that will give a clear picture of brand awareness, 14 SMA your online reputation, successes and failure of your online marketing strategies. (Social Media Optimization). Building publicity through social 15 SMO media channels and online communities to drive traffic from sources other than search engines. 4. Conclusion Along with the development of the internet, social media are showing their power to many aspects of life. They are constructing their own empire and leaving behind anyone who does not catch up with them. In order not to be outdated, it is advisable to be able to exploit and get full messages from social networks and e-platforms. To serve that purpose, knowing the basic and latest social media vocabulary is an advantage. The research has provided some of the updated social media terminologies with their meaning and hopefully, they will help the readers when they surf those e-platforms.
