This purpose of this work was to investigate the patient radiation doses and image quality of a Philips/Agfa computed radiographic (CR) system and a Philips indirect-capture digital radiographic (DR) system in a paediatric setting. A CDRAD digital radiographic contrast-detail phantom was used to assess radiographic image quality. Perspex slabs of three different thicknesses (6, 11 and 16 cm) were used to simulate paediatric patients of three arbitrary ages.

This study aims to investigate idioms that carry conceptual metaphor about power based on the theory of Lakoff and Johnson. To go further, this study is done to explore the similarities and the differences between the use of metaphor about power in English and Vietnamese idioms that reflect the culture of each language community.

The thesis aims to study the problems of image processing under the approach of HA theory. Building a gray level transformation function in S form to enhance the contrast for color images to apply HA. New homogeneity with hedge algebra applies to enhance contrast for color images. Building a photo fading transformation that applies to multi-channel images does not lose image detail.

The result of the study will be another illustration for the beauty of language, especially when it is used under the observation of cognitive semantics and metaphor. The findings of a contrastive analysis of English and Vietnamese will be a great benefit for Vietnamese learners of English. Moreover, the deep investigation will help them improve their understanding of meanings of words denoting the Names of human body parts and get better results in reading comprehension, translation work as well as in everyday language.

The goal of this study was to determine the effects of a putative specific cytosolic phospholipase A2 inhibitor, arachidonyl trifluoromethyl ketone (AACOCF3), on arachidonic acid (AA) release and lipid mediator biosynthesis by ionophore-stimulated human neutrophils. Initial studies indicated that AACOCF3 at concentrations 0–10 lM did not affect AA release from neutrophils. In contrast, AACOCF3 potently inhibited leukotriene B4 formation by ionophore-stimulated neutrophils (IC50 2.5 lM).

The high-pressure stopped-flow technique is applied to study the CO binding in cytochrome P450cam (P450cam) bound with homologous substrates (1R-camphor, camphane, norcamphor and norbornane) and in the substrate-free protein. The activation volume DV # of the CO on-rate is positive for P450cam bound with substrates that do not contain methyl groups. The kon rate constant for these substrate complexes is in the order of 3 · 106 M)1Æs)1. In contrast, P450cam complexed with substrates carrying methyl groups show a negative activation volume and a low kon rate constant of % 3 · 104 M)1Æs)1. ...

Strictosidine glucosidase (SG) is an enzyme that catalyses the second step in the biosynthesis of various classes of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids. Based on the comparison of cDNA sequences of SG from Catharanthus roseus and raucaffricine glucosidase (RG) from Rauvolfia serpentina, primers for RT-PCR were designed and the cDNA encoding SG was cloned from R. serpentina cell suspension cultures. The active enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. Analysis of its deduced amino-acid sequence assigned the SG from R. serpentina to family 1 of glycosyl hydrolases.

4-Coumarate:CoA ligase (4CL) is involved in the formation of coenzyme A thioesters of hydroxycinnamic acids that are central substrates for subsequent condensation, reduction, and transfer reactions in the biosynthesis of plant phenylpropanoids. Previous studies of 4CL appear to suggest that many isoenzymes are functionally equivalent in supplying substrates to various subsequent branches of phenylpropanoid biosyntheses. In contrast, divergent members of a 4CL gene family were identified in soybean (Glycine max L.).

Antizyme is a polyamine-induced cellular protein that binds to ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), and targets it to rapid ubiquitin-independent degradation by the 26S proteasome. However, the metabolic fate of antizyme is not clear. We have tested the stability of antizyme in mammalian cells. In contrast with previous studies demonstrating stability in vitro in a reticulocyte lysate-based degradation system, in cells antizyme is rapidly degraded and this degradation is inhibited by specific proteasome inhibitors. ...

Transglutaminase (TGase) fromStreptomyces mobaraensis is secreted as a precursor protein which is completely acti-vated by the endoprotease TAMEP, a member of the M4 protease family [Zotzel, J., Keller, P. & Fuchsbauer, H.-L. (2003) Eur. J. Biochem. 270, 3214–3222]. In contrast with the mature enzyme, TAMEP-activated TGase exhibits an additional N-terminal tetrapeptide (Phe-Arg-Ala-Pro) sug-gesting truncation, at least, by a second protease.

Drosophilais a powerful model system to study the regula-tory and effector mechanisms of innate immunity. To iden-tify molecules induced in the course of viral infection in this insect, we have developed a model based on intrathoracic injection of the picorna-like DrosophilaCvirus(DCV).We have used MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to compare the hemolymph of DCV infected flies and control flies. By contrast with the strong humoral response triggered by injectionof bacteriaor fungal spores, we have identifiedonly one molecule induced in the hemolymph of virus infected flies....

Anandamide is an endogenous ligand for cannabinoid receptor and its protein-mediated transport across cellular membranes has been demonstrated in cells derived from brain as well as in cells of the immune system. This lipid is inactivated via intracellular degradation by a fatty acid amidohydrolase (FAAH). In the present study, we report that rabbit platelets, in contrast to human platelets, do not possess a carrier-mediated mechanism for the transport of [ 3 H]anandamide into the cell, i.e. cellular uptake was not temperature dependent and its accumulation was not satu-rable. ...

Spatial organizationofwild-type (strainU1) tobaccomosaic virus (TMV) and of the temperature-sensitive TMV ts21–66 mutant was compared by tritium planigraphy. The ts21–66 mutant contains two substitutions in the coat protein (Ile21fiThr and Asp66fiGly) and, in contrast withU1, induces a hypersensitive response (formation of necroses) on the leaves of plants bearing a host resistance geneN¢(for example Nicotiana sylvestris); TMV U1 induces systemic infection (mosaic) on the leaves of such plants.

In the past, we presented tutorials called “Introduction to Statistical Machine Translation”, aimed at people who know little or nothing about the field and want to get acquainted with the basic concepts. This tutorial, by contrast, goes more deeply into selected topics of intense current interest. We aim at two types of participants: 1. People who understand the basic idea of statistical machine translation and want to get a survey of hot-topic current research, in terms that they can understand. 2.

In recent studies on heme-copper oxidases a particular glutamate residue in subunit II has been suggested to constitute the entry point of the so-called K pathway. In contrast, mutations of this residue (E78 II ) in the Paracoccus denitrificanscytochromecoxidase do not affect its catalytic activity at all (E78 II Q) or reduce it to about 50% (E78 II A); in the latter case, the mutation causes no drastic decrease in hemea3 reduction kinetics under anaerobic con-ditions, when compared to typical K pathway mutants....

High-pressure NMR experiments performed on the histi-dine-containing phosphocarrier protein (HPr) fromSta-phylococcus carnosushave shown that residue Ile14, which is located in the active-centre loop, exhibits a peculiarly small pressure response. In contrast, the rest of the loop shows strong pressure effects as is expected for typical protein interaction sites. To elucidate the structural role of this residue, the mutant protein HPr(I14A), in which Ile14 is replaced by Ala, was produced and studied by solution NMR spectroscopy. ...
