Readers who meet him in the pages of this book will wonder why he isn't better known. The first of Widerøe's many pioneering contributions in the field of accelerator physics was the betatron, the second, the linear accelerator, both summarized in a 27 page PhD. Widerøe’s story also includes a fair share of drama, particularly during World War II when both Germans and the Allies vied for his collaboration.

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and whole breast radiation therapy (WBRT) are the standard of care for early-stage breast cancer (BC). Increasing the biological effective dose (BED) of radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can increase local control rates and improve overall survival. Compared with conventional fractionated radiotherapy, accelerated hypofractionated radiotherapy can yield higher BED, shorten the total treatment time, and theoretically obtain better efficacy.

Results from two decades of study have conclusively shown that radiation therapy has an important role in ensuring local control for patients with early-stage breast cancer who are treated with breast-conserving surgery. When breast-conservation therapy was first explored as an alternative to mastectomy, many trials investigated whether surgical resection of the tumor-bearing region of the breast was sufficient, or whether adjuvant irradiation of the entire breast would be required to improve patient outcome.
