Ebook "Packaging for food preservation (Food engineering series)" will be focused on the three most important aspects of food packaging: Modeling, Materials and Packaging Strategies. The modeling section will provide a complete overview of mass transport phenomena in polymers intended for food packaging applications. The materials section will cover the most interesting problem-solving solutions in the field of food packaging, i.e., low environmental impact active films with antimicrobial activity.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a critical activator of infammation. Circulating mtDNA released causes lung injury in experimental models. We hypothesized that elevated plasma mtDNA levels are associated with acute lung injury (ALI) in septic patients.

Activated platelets release serotonin that binds 5-HT2B receptor on fibroblasts leading to fibroblast activation. Clopidogrel, an inhibitor of ADP-dependent platelet activation prevents fibrosis in animal models of systemic sclerosis (SSc).

Zebrafish are able to regenerate many of its tissues and organs after damage. In amphibians this process is regulated by nerve fibres present at the site of injury, which have been proposed to release factors into the amputated limbs/fins, promoting and sustaining the proliferation of blastemal cells.

The hypoxia-activated prodrug TH-302 is reduced at its nitroimidazole group and selectively under hypoxic conditions releases the DNA cross-linker bromo-isophosphoramide mustard (Br-IPM). Here, we have explored the effect of Chk1 inhibition on TH-302-mediated pharmacological activities.

The Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) pathway plays a role in tumour development and progression. In vivo, IGF1 activity is regulated by the IGF binding proteins (IGFBPs). IGFBP4 inhibits the activity of IGF1 but proteolytic cleavage by pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) releases active IGF1.

TMEM16A Ca2+-activated Cl channels are expressed in pancreatic acinar cells and participate in inflammation-associated diseases. Whether TMEM16A contributes to the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis (AP) remains unknown. Here, we found that increased TMEM16A expression in the pancreatic tissue was correlated with the interleukin-6 (IL-6) level in the pancreatic tissue and in the serum of a cerulein-induced AP mouse model.

The Leaking Fuel Experiment test facility was designed to simulate the activity release from spent leaking fuel rods under steady state and transient conditions in the spent fuel pool. The experimental rig included an electrically heated fuel rod with different defects and a cooling system. The fission product transport was simulated by potassium-chloride.

The currently accepted model of moult control in crusta-ceans relies entirely on the hypothesis that moult-inhibiting hormone (MIH) and crustacean hyperglycaemic hormone (CHH) repress ecdysteroid synthesis of the target tissue (Y-organ) only during intermoult, and that changes in syn-thesis and/or release of these neurohormones are central to moult control.

There has been considerable debate in Canada on the relative contributions of mercury from natural sources versus releases to the environment from human activity. One of the challenges with this debate is the lack of accurate information on mercury emissions, past and present. Scientists have ana- lyzed sediment cores and determined that the levels of mercury in the environment today are more than double what they were in pre-industrial times. They have also measured mercury in the atmos- phere and found that it continues to increase globally at more than one per cent per year.

Active Directory is the directory service that comes with Windows 2000 Server and extends to be the directory service for other servers, such as Exchange Server 2000 and Mobile Information Server. Prior to the release of Windows 2000, many people speculated on how Active Directory could help them reduce costs or increase services to end-users.To some, Active Directory provided a competitive advantage stemming from its integration with Internet applications. But much of this speculation took place before Active Directory was available to the public.
