Bioinspired structures are remarkable porous structures with great strengthto-weight ratios. Hence, they have been applied in various fields including biomedical, transportation, and aerospace materials, etc. Recent studies have shown the significant impact of the plastic 3D printed triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) structure on the cement beam including increasing the peak load, reducing the deflection, and improving the ductility.

The aim of this Master of Engineering (MEng) - Aerospace thesis is to study the structural response and failure of aerospace grade composites during exposure to fire. Key aspects of the research are to analyse the thermal and mechanical responses of laminates and sandwich composites in high temperature and fire environments, which result in softening and structural failure. The research is concentrated on carbon/epoxy laminates and sandwich composites, which are the most common composite materials used in aerospace structures.

The aim of this Masters of Engineering (MEng) - Aerospace thesis was to investigate the durability of Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors (PWAS) for the health monitoring of composite structures. One significant challenge faced by the aviation industry is the cost and time associated with maintaining aircrafts, in particular, aging airliners. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a possible approach to reduce the high cost of inspection and maintenance.

The fracture characteristics of single-lap bonded joints in composites to be investigated by structural analysis and experimentally. The effects of bonding method, surface roughness, bond line thickness and the existence of fillet on the failure characteristics and strength of bonded single-lap joints were evaluated experimentally. The failure process, failure mode and the behavior of loaddisplacement curve was apparently different according to bonding method to be evaluated.

Long fibre reinforced polymer composite materials have found many applications in many industries, such as aerospace, automotive, marine, wind turbine, and sports. Techniques for the manufacturing of structures used in these industries have been mainly Hand Lay Up (HLU), and Liquid Composite Moulding. While there are a few automated methods of manufacturing, such as Filament Winding and Pultrusion, these techniques are restricted to make structures that consist of surfaces of revolution, or fibres that are aligned only along one direction.

This paper presents a control structure for orbital servicing mission of CEASAR robotic arm developed by German Aerospace Center (DLR). In order to reduce mass the CEASAR arm is equipped with Harmonic-Drives with high ratio which unfortunately lead to high joint elasticity and high motor friction and have to be considered in controller design for successful manipulator in-orbit operations.

Common engineering materials reach in many engineering applications such as automotive or aerospace; their limits and new developments are required to fulfill increasing demands on performance and characteristics. The properties of mate- rials can be increased, for example, by combining different materials to achieve better properties than a single constituent or by shaping the material or constituents in a specific structure. Many of these new materials reveal a much more complex behavior than traditional engineering materials due to their advanced structure or composition.
