Ebook "New gold-catalyzed reactions and applications for the synthesis of alkaloids" presents a detailed study of the inter- and intramolecular reactions of carbonyl compounds with 1,6-enynes using gold (I) complexes. An important part of the work involved streamlining the variables that allow the selective synthesis of different products such as tricyclic compounds, dihydropyrans, 1,3-dienes or cyclobutenes.

For the first time, removal of oxygen atoms from allylic hydroperoxide functionality and reintroduction to the double bond was achieved using catalytic OsO4 and chiral cinchona alkaloid derivatives in an acetone–water mixture to give corresponding chiral 1/2,3-triol with an enantioselectivity up to 99% ee. The hydroperoxide group was used as both a co-oxidant and a source of hydroxyl groups.

A convenient and efficient method has emerged for the one-pot synthesis of substituted quinazolin-4(3H)- ones and nonaromatic alkaloids. 2-Substituted quinazolin-4(3H)-ones, 2,3-disubstituted quinazolin-4(3H)-ones, and 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones were obtained at yields of 46% to 95% by a one-pot reaction of N -(2-aminobenzoyl) benzotriazoles with amines and orthoesters or aldehydes under catalyst-free conditions.

Marine compound dendrodoine was first obtained from tunicate species (Dendrodo grossularia). It has a five-membered ring, namely, it is a heterocycle thiadiazole, which is found rarely in natural sources. Following its biological activities, novel analogs have been investigated recently. Synthesis of the analogs for this study is realized with uncommon thiazole closure, including methylene-carbonyl condensation. Structures are elucidated by NMR (1H, 13C) and HRMS spectrums.

Dendrobium huoshanense C.Z. Tang et S.J. Cheng is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine with high medicinal value in China. Polysaccharides and alkaloids are its main active ingredients. To understand the difference of main active ingredients in different tissues, we determined the contents of polysaccharides and alkaloids in the roots, stems and leaves of D. huoshanense.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized using culture filtrate of fungal antagonist Trichoderma asperellum for which silver nitrate was used as the precursor and were characterized by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, DLS, Zeta sizer, TEM and EDX. The physiological effects of Ag NPs on the host crop i.e. tea (clone-TV21) was evaluated at 100% concentration by introducing into the host with five different treatment methods viz. cutting treatment (one leaf bud cutting), injection method, foliar spray, soil application and seedling root dip treatment with 10 replicates for each.

Two new conjugates of murrayafoline A with zerumbone and artemisinin 3, 11 were prepared by N-alkylation, in which, compound 3 was synthesized from two consecutive Nalkylation reactions. Their cytotoxicity was evaluated on four human cancer cell lines Hep-G2, LU, RD and Fl. The result showed that both compounds exhibited no activity against the tested cell lines.

Recently, some of the furoquinoline alkaloids were found to have an interesting biological activity, for example, anti-cancer, antiplatelet aggregation and antifungal activities. The interesting biological activity made these compounds 1-13 attractive targets in organic chemistry. A novel generally applicable synthesis of furoquinolines is described. The condensation of 2- methoxy aniline and malonic acid in the presence of POCl3 gave 2,4-dichloro-8- methoxyquinoline. Then, treatment of this compound with sodium methoxide in methanol under reflux afforded 4,8-dimethoxyquinoline.

In the biosynthesis of the antiarrhythmic alkaloid ajmaline, polyneuridine aldehyde esterase (PNAE) catalyses a central reaction by transforming polyneuridine aldehyde into epivellosimine, which is the immediate precursor for the synthesis of the ajmalane skeleton. The PNAE cDNA was previously heterologously expressed in E. coli. Sequence alignments indicated that PNAE has a 43% identity to a hydroxynitrile lyase from Hevea brasiliensis, which is a member of the a/b hydrolase superfamily. The catalytic triad, which is typical for this family, is conserved.

Catharanthus roseus(L.) G. Don produces a number of biologically active terpenoid indole alkaloids via a complex terpenoid indole alkaloid biosyn-thetic pathway. The final dimerization step of this pathway, leading to the synthesis of a dimeric alkaloid, vinblastine, was demonstrated to be cata-lyzed by a basic peroxidase.

(S)-Stylopine is an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of benzophe-nanthridine alkaloids, such as sanguinarine. Stylopine biosynthesis involves the sequential formation of two methylenedioxy bridges. Although the methylenedioxy bridge-forming P450 (CYP719) involved in berberine bio-synthesis has been cloned from Coptis japonica[Ikezawa N, Tanaka M,
