Municipal wastewater treatment plants generally utilise biological activated sludge processes to remove organic compounds and nitrogen. The biological nitrogen removal (BNR) occurs in two steps, nitrification (ammonium removal) and denitrification (nitrates removal). This study focused on a medium-sized wastewater treatment plant (WTP) which experienced poor nitrification for years, mainly when the weather temperature drops.

Lactate concentration is a robust predictor of mortality but in many low resource settings facilities for its analysis are not available. Anion gap (AG), calculated from clinical chemistry results, is a marker of metabolic acidosis and may be more easily obtained in such settings. In this systematic review and meta-analysis we investigated whether the AG predicts mortality in adult patients admitted to critical care settings.

Tetra–n-butylammonium bromide modified sugar beet pulp (TBAB–SBP) with good biosorption and regeneration potential was prepared for removal of dye from contaminated solutions. The decolorization performance of TBAB–SBP was investigated using Reactive Yellow 2 (RY2) as a model dye. The characterization of the modified biosorbent was investigated by IR, SEM, zeta potential, and BET surface area analysis to discuss the decolorization mechanism. The effects of initial pH, biosorbent amount, contact time, dye concentration, and flow rate on the treatment process were examined.

In this work, new tunable aryl alkyl pyrazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids/salts, 2-ethyl-1-(p-X-phenyl)-3,5- dimethylpyrazolium tetrafluoroborate [X: -Br (4a), -OCH3 (4b), -NO2 (4c)] and 2-butyl-1-(p-X-phenyl)-3,5-dimethylpyrazolium tetrafluoroborate [X: -Br (5a), -OCH3 (5b), -NO2 (5c)], were synthesized by following halide-free synthetic route. Their chemical structures were identified through NMR (1 H, 13C, 19F), IR, elemental analysis, and HRMS data. The synthesized 4a-4c and 5a-5c salts were used for the removal studies of methyl orange dye from aqueous solutions.

This study aimed to assess the effect of cadmium (Cd2+) concentrations on biovolume, pigments, malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide, proline, total phenolic compounds, total protein, and total carbohydrate contents of Cladophora glomerata. Cultivations of the alga (8.0 ± 0.1 g as fresh weight) were exposed to 7.5, 15, 30, and 60 mg/L of Cd2+ ions in 500 mL flasks containing 400 mL of the medium on a shaker at 120 rpm for 7 days. Results of Fourier transform infrared analyses indicated that the amide, anionic, and amino groups had significant rolesin the binding of Cd2+ on C. glomerata.

The purpose of this study was to compare the adsorption behavior of cationic and anionic dyes onto a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanostructure that was rich in a negative charge. Herein, the hBN nanostructure was synthesized using boric acid as a precursor material. The characteristic peaks of the hBN nanostructure were performed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies. The morphology and the particle size of hBN nanostructure were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Disposal of contaminated wastewater causes many serious problems especially when it gets mixed with the ground and seawater. It is, therefore, important to apply any remedial action to eradicate dangerous pollutants from the aqueous effluents and to avoid exposure of this wastewater to aquatic life. Through this body of work it was found that both lysozyme and sfGFP remained in their native state in each of the selected PILs at 1 mol% IL: water concentrations. Both selected proteins were stable to highest proportions of PILs which contained the propylammonium cation and the acetate anion. This was contrary to some previously reported studies where the elongation of the alkyl chain length provided a greater stabilising effect than the shorter chained ILs.

In this study, the removal of matrix and isobaric interferences for the quantitative determination of 87 Sr/86 Sr isotopic ratio using ICP-MS was focused. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Cu-chitosan NCPs for its antifungal activities against Fusarium verticillioids causing post flowering stalk rot (PFSR) disease of maize. The electrolyte solutions, sweep rates, purges time, etc...were researched on the determination of cyanide. Distillation time of 90 minutes was recommended to use; some interferences of other anions including sulphide and sulphite were also investigated. Cyanide content ion of cassava and bamboo shoot has been determined by differential pulse polarography method using the quantitative technique of standard addition. The ranges of cyanide concentration in bamboo shoot were within 0.00045 -0.075 mg/g and from limit of detection to 1.7902 mg/g for cassava.

Eighteen animals were engaged for therapeutic trial with three groups (Group 1; Control, Group 2; Mixture of Ammonium Chloride and Calcium Sulphate at 1:1 ratio and Group 3; Commercial salts preparation, Hyporid™) containing six animals each. Cell suspension of Panax ginseng was cultivated in bioreactor under different concentrations of ethylene. The synthesis of saponin was greatly reduced in all the ethylene concentrations compared to control. The cell fresh (320 g/L) and dry weight (12.5 g/L) were increased at 10 ppm ethylene concentration at the experiment end. However, at higher ethylene concentration (20 ppm) the fresh and dry weight decreased significantly when compared with control.
