Ebook "Malaria: Drugs, disease and post-genomic biology" despite rapid increases in knowledge, malaria continues to kill more than a million people each year and causes symptomatic disease in a further 300 million individuals. This volume brings some of the world's best investigators to describe recent advances in both the scientific and clinical aspects of malaria, and bridges between the two.

A major advance in antimalarial drug discovery has been the shift towards cell-based phenotypic screening, with notable progress in the screening of compounds against the asexual blood stage, liver stage, and gametocytes. A primary method for drug target deconvolution in Plasmodium falciparum is in vitro evolution of compound-resistant parasites followed by whole-genome scans.

Ebook "Artemisia annua - Pharmacology and biotechnology" is an effective antimalarial agent, particularly for multi-drug resistant and cerebral malaria. However, the concentration of artemisinin in the plant is very low. Because the chemical synthesis of artemisinin is complicated and not economically feasible in view of the poor yield of the drug, the intact plant remains the only viable source of artemisinin production. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the concentration of artemisinin in A. annua to reduce the cost of artemisinin based antimalarial drugs.

Colorectal cancer is a common malignant tumour. Invasive growth and distant metastasis are the main characteristics of its malignant biological behaviour, and they are also the primary factors leading to death in colon cancer patients. Atovaquone is an antimalarial drug, and its anticancer effect has recently been demonstrated in several cancer models in vitro and in vivo, but it has not been examined in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease that causes systemic inflammation which affects multiple organs. There is no cure for SLE. Conventional treatment options include antimalarial drugs, corticosteroids, and immune suppressants, but a number of patients are resistant to treatment or suffer from severe side effects.

This study was conducted between January and August, 2016 in some malarial prevalence areas of Vietnam including Dak Nong and Gia Lai provinces. Total of 114 anti-malarial medicine samples (of which 55 available antimalarials and 59 selected antibiotics for malaria treatment) were collected from public and private health facilities.

Quantitative determination of major alkaloids in Cinchona bark by Supercritical Fluid Chromatography
Chinoline alkaloids found in Cinchona bark still play an important role in medicine, for example as antimalarial and antiarrhythmic drugs. For thefirsttime Supercritical Fluid Chromatography has been utilized for their separation.

Plasmodium falciparum exhibits resistance to the artemisinin component of the frontline antimalarial treatment Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy in South East Asia. Millions of lives will be at risk if artemisinin resistance (ART-R) spreads to Africa. Single non-synonymous mutations in the propeller region of PF3D7_1343700,“K13” are implicated in resistance. In this work, we use transcriptional profiling to characterize a laboratory-generated k13 insertional mutant previously demonstrated to have increased sensitivity to artemisinins to explore the functional role of k13.

Bloodstream malaria parasites require Ca++ for their development, but the sites and mechanisms of Ca++ utilization are not well understood. We hypothesized that there may be differences in Ca++ uptake or utilization by genetically distinct lines of P. falciparum.

The increased multidrug resistance among antimalarial drugs produces the urgency of potent anti malarial to combat resistant malaria and the malaria burden worldwide. The protein which may prevent the growth or transmission of malaria parasite may be the great target for rational drug designing.

Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is an important enzyme for de novo synthesis of nucleotides in Plasmodium falciparum and it is essential for cell proliferation. DHFR is a well known antimalarial target for drugs like cycloguanil and pyrimethamine which target its inhibition for their pharmacological actions.

Ghana changed their antimalarial drug policy from monotherapies to Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies in 2004 in order to provide more efficacious medicines for treatment of malaria. The policy change can be eroded if poor quality Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies are allowed to remain on the Ghanaian market unchecked by regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies.

Malaria is one of the killer diseases posing serious threat across the globe. Managing malaria has become a big challenge due to the drug resistance. Now considering the global trend, there is an immense need to discover novel antimalarial drug. There is variety of routes available, in that especially, computer aided molecular drug discovery is one of the successful emerging platform to develop drug molecules.

Effect of artemether on cytokine profile and egg induced pathology in murine schistosomiasis mansoni
Artemether (ART), the methylated derivative of artemisinin, is an efficacious antimalarial drug that also displays antischistosomal properties. This study was designed to evaluate the immunomodulatory action of a single intramuscular dose (50 mg/kg body weight) of ART in comparison with PZQ treatment (42 days PI). ART administration was 7, 14, 21 and 45 days PI. ART effect was studied parasitologically, histopathologically and immunologically. It was found that maximum effect was reached when ART treatment interfered with 14 or 21 days old schistosomula.

Plasmodium falciparum malaria remains a serious endemic disease in many parts of the world. It is estimated that 120 million cases occur worldwide each year, causing over one million deaths. The problem has been compounded by the emergence of strains of P. falciparum resistant to virtually all antimalarial agents. Resistance to chloroquine has now spread to almost all areas where malaria is endemic. Chloroquine-resistant strains are typically cross resistant to all drugs of relative chemical structure, and therefore the need for finding new molecules with novel modes of action is urgent.

Thioredoxins are a group of small redox-active proteins involved in cellular redox regulatory processes as well as antioxidant defense. Thioredoxin, glutaredoxin, and try-paredoxin are members of the thioredoxin superfamily and share structural and functional characteristics. In the mal-arial parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, a functional thio-redoxin and glutathione system have been demonstrated and are considered to be attractive targets for antimalarial drug development.
