Flavonoids are a diverse group of natural compounds extensively studied in various research articles. They are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and exhibit various biological activities, including antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, and antimicrobial effects. The genus Knema Lour., which contains many species in Southeast Asia, has been traditionally used to treat various ailments. The current review aims to provide a comprehensive update on the isolation of flavonoids and other secondary metabolites from the genus Knema Lour. between 1978 and 2022.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a global health concern. Many antibiotics are no longer effective at treating MRSA, which causes an increase in adverse patient outcomes. This has led to calls for new antibiotics and treatment strategies to combat the spread of MRSA and multidrug resistance (MDR).

In our study, we evaluate antimicrobial, antiquorum sensing (QS) and antioxidant activity of Usnea longissima secondary metabolites extracted in acetone, methanol, and 70% hydroalcoholic solvents. Antimicrobial activity of extracts was evaluated against fungus (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans) and six bacterial (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aerogenosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans) strains.

Marine endophytic fungi (MEF) are good sources of structurally unique and biologically active secondary metabolites. Due to the increase in antimicrobial resistance, the secondary metabolites from MEF ought to be fully explored to identify candidates which could serve as lead compounds for novel drug development.

Seven compounds were isolated and characterized from the culture broth of the marine bacteria Nocardiopsis sp. (strain G057), which was isolated from sediment collecting at Cô Tô – Quảng Ninh. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis including MS and 2D NMR, as well as by comparison with reported data in the literature. All compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against a panel of clinically significant microorganisms. Compounds 1, 2 and 7 selectively inhibited Escherichia coli with a MIC value of 32, 64, 8 μg/mL, respectively.

The metabolite 2-(1,1-diallyl-but-3-enyl)-5-nonyl-phenol isolated from Streptomyces sp. TC1 exhibited antimicrobial activity against bacterial leaf blight pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). The in vitro antimicrobial activity was found to be between 1.8-2.5 cm in agar well diffusion assay against the tested Xoo isolates and 200 µg/ml in terms of minimum inhibitory concentration. The isolated compound showed well binding with the virulence proteins of Xoo by producing a better docking score in molecular docking studies.

Actinomycetes have got considerable attention worldwide due to the production of many useful bioactive metabolites. In the present study, the antimicrobial potential of novel Actinomycetes has been evaluated by the initial screening of seven rhizosphere samples in Egypt. The primary and secondary screening were performed against Bacillus cereus (ATCC33018), and E.coli O157 (ATCC93111) as model strains of Gram positive and Gram negative species, respectively.

In nature, there exist a wide variety of microbes that can be of any economical importance to humans. A specialized group of microorganisms includes pigmented yeasts. They are yeasts that develop colored pigment as their secondary metabolites. In this study, pigmented yeasts were isolated from different sample (soil, leaves, fruits, coconut, and air) on Sabouraud’s agar. Four strains were selected that showed pigmentation. Various morphological and biochemical tests were performed for identification of the strains.

This study was designed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of methanolic Myristica fragrans seed extract tested against four bacterial species isolated as oral pathogen. The susceptibility of these different bacterial species toward the extract of this plant seed was compared with each other. Results showed that methanolic extract exhibited antibacterial activity against gram positive bacterial species, the diameter of inhibition zone reached 28±0.14 mm against E. faecalis and 24±0.002 mm against S. mitis by extract.
