Ebook "Studies on women’s health (Oxidative stress in applied basic research and clinical practice series)" covers data describing the role of free radicals and antioxidants that deal with clinical and pre-clinical trials, as well as basic research in the area of women's health. There is increasing evidence that oxidative stress is a causative, or at least a supporting factor in female pathology and infertility. During advancing gestational age, oxidative stress biomakers rise.

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant cells under environmental stress cause oxidative stress, which is one of major factors limiting the plant productivity. To prevent this limitation by stress conditions, a possible strategy is to strengthen the antioxidant defense of plants by gene manipulation of antioxidant enzymes and low molecular-weight (LMW) antioxidants. LMW antioxidants are important for the plant protection to environmental stress and also have nutritional merits for humans as antiaging and antidisease molecules.

The aim of this work was to understand involvement of PARylation in inducing enzymatic antioxidant defence and alternative electron sinks in response to salinity. For this purpose A. thaliana plants were treated with 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB), which is a PARP inhibitor, in the presence of 100 mM NaCl. The 3-AB treatment induced plant fresh weight under control and salinity conditions. Moreover, 100 mM NaCl + 3-AB treated plants had lower lipid peroxidation when compared to 100 mM NaCl group indicating mitigation of oxidative stress.

The results showed that the percentage of disease incidence was increased in non treated tomato seedlings in time dependent manner and reached the maximum level (65%) after 6 weeks of infection. Treatments of tomato plants with neem and willow aqueous extracts reduced the percentage of disease incidence to the level of 25.5% and 27.8% after 6 weeks of infection respectively.

Nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a crucial transcription factor that regulates the expression of defensive antioxidants and detoxification enzymes in cells. In a previous study, we showed that expression of the Nrf2 gene is regulated by an epigenetic modification. Rauvolfia verticillata, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine widely used in China, possesses anticancer and antioxidant effects. In this study, we investigated how Nrf2 is epigenetically regulated by reserpine, the main active component in R. verticillata, in mouse skin epidermal JB6 P+ cells.

We compared the enzymatic antioxidative defence mechanisms of some regional soybean genotypes cultivated mainly in the regions of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The variability in the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) and their changes under drought stress were investigated. The higher activity levels of antioxidant enzymes may contribute to better stress tolerance by increasing protection capacity against oxidative damage.

The aim of the study was to examine changes in Cu‒Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), their gel electrophoresis profiles, glutathione reductase (GR) activity, amount of glutathione (GSH), and the activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST) - phase II biotransformation enzyme in the midgut tissue of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae)) larvae after ghrelin treatment.

Ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation has an adverse effect on plant cells because it causes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This is scavenged by some endogenous defense systems. In this study, the activities of H2O2- detoxifying antioxidant enzymes in 4 barley cultivars pretreated with high temperature or NaCl before UV-B irradiation were investigated.

Pelargonium petal abscission and ethylene-induced leaf senescence are major problems that reduce the longevity of plants. This study was carried out to determine the poststorage influence of nanosilver (NS) particle (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 mg L–1) application during dark storage period on chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments, malondialdehyde (MDA) content.

This research was an attempt to study the effect of heavy metals lead and cadmium (0.05 mM and 0.3 mM) on growth and antioxidant enzymes of seedlings of 2 mung bean genotypes (NM 19-19 and Azri mung-2006). Results revealed that germination percentage and seedling length decreased when compared with the control for both genotypes.

The bifunctional enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-6-phospho-gluconolactonase (G6PD-6PGL) found in Plasmodium falciparum has unique structural and functional characteristics restricted to this genus. This study was designed to examine the effects of RNA-mediated PfG6PD-6PGL gene silencing in cultures ofP. falciparumon the expression of para-site antioxidant defense genes at the transcription level.

Free radicals are constantly formed in living cells and removed by antioxidant defenses. Antioxidant enzymes are the main line of defense against free radicals in animal and plant cells. Uncontrolled generation ROS are involved in a number of human disease states, including diabetes and cancer due to disturbance in cellular and molecular processes including cell growth, differentiation and proliferation.
