Preparations derived from Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegl. mycelium are worldwide used as dietary supplements containing compounds active as immune system enhancers, demonstrating chemopreventive and anticancer activity. L. edodes mycelium enriched with organic forms of selenium like selenized yeast possess putative, higher cancer preventive properties. The objective of this study was to test the effect of enrichment in selenium on antioxidant, reducing and free radical scavenging activity of water and alcohol extracts from mycelium of L. edodes (Berk.).

Shiitake mushroom contains several therapeutic actions such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, carried by the diversity of its components. In the present work, extracts from shiitake mushroom were obtained using different extraction techniques: high-pressure operations and low-pressure methods. The high-pressure technique was applied to obtain shiitake extracts using pure CO2 and CO2 with co-solvent in pressures up to 30 MPa.

Permanganate may be applied to sites as either potassium permanganate (KMnO4) or sodium permanganate (NaMnO4). Where cost dominates over engineering factors at a site, potassium permanganate is the preferred chemical form because it is more widely available, less costly, and is available in solid form, which facilitates transport and handling. Where other factors are more important, the liquid form of sodium permangante is preferable.

Our setup allows us to disentan- gle the implications of these two alternative pricing mechanisms that are standard in the open-economy macro literature. In our model, di®erent assumptions regarding the pricing decisions of ¯rms are virtually inconsequential for the properties of aggregate variables, other than the terms of trade. In particular, the real exchange rate and the international relative price of ¯nal tradable goods behave similarly across the two price setting regimes.

Following their lipophilicity, it is more plausible that vitamin E and ß-carotene cooperate to protect membranes and lipoproteins from oxidative damages. Of course, as all antioxidants, vitamin E exerts other biological functions that are independent from its antioxidant properties, including modulation of cellular signaling, gene expression, immune response, and many more. However, as opposed to other vitamins, lack of vitamin E results in rather unspecific symptoms, also highlighting that this vitamin is mainly needed for its antioxidant activity in vivo.

Quinolinic acid (QUIN) excitotoxicity is mediated by elevated intracellular Ca 2+ levels, and nitric oxide-mediated oxidative stress, resulting in DNA damage, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) activation, NAD + deple-tion and cell death. We evaluated the effect of a series of polyphenolic compounds [i.e. epigallocatechin gallate (EPCG), catechin hydrate, curcu-min, apigenin, naringenin and gallotannin] with antioxidant properties on QUIN-induced excitotoxicity on primary cultures of human neurons....

Human serum albumin (HSA) exists in both reduced and oxidized forms, and the percentage of oxidized albumin increases in several diseases. How-ever, little is known regarding the pathophysiological significance of oxida-tion due to poor characterization of the precise structural and functional properties of oxidized HSA.

Much of the toxicity of Hb has been linked to its redox activity; Hb may generate reactive oxygen species, such as the superoxide anion. Superoxide is intrinsically toxic, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) provides important cellular protection. However, if the Hb molecule is located outside the red blood cell, the normal protection systems involving SOD and catalase are no longer closely associated with it, exposing Hb and its cellular surround

Vitamin C, a reducing agent and antioxidant, is a cofactor in reactions cata-lyzed by Cu + -dependent monooxygenases and Fe 2+ -dependent dioxygenas-es. It is synthesized, in vertebrates having this capacity, fromd-glucuronate. The latter is formed through direct hydrolysis of uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucuronate by enzyme(s) bound to the endoplasmic reticulum mem-brane, sharing many properties with, and most likely identical to, UDP-glucuronosyltransferases.
