75% of the mortality associated with burn injuries is related to infection The aim of the present study was to identify the bacterial profile of burn wound infection (BWI) in our setting and determine their susceptibility pattern to commonly used antibiotics.This prospective study was conducted over a period of one year in a teaching tertiary care hospital, Chennai. A total of 100 patients with burns of total body surface area (TBSA) of 20% to 40% were included. Three wound swabs on 1st , 4 th and 7th day were collected aseptically and processed.

A blue rock pigeon which was found dead on the roadside at Chennai was subjected to a detailed necropsy. Numerous yellowish firm nodules were present on the unfeathered areas of skin while no diphtheritic lesions could be detected either in upper respiratory tract or digestive tract. Intracytoplasmic inclusions could be detected in the epidermal cells on histopathological examination. Intestinal contents revealed no endoparasites.

Listeria monocytogenes is widely distributed and found in many food commodities. Post processing contamination is the major source and cross contamination may also occur at the retail shop and also in products due to improper hygienic practices. A study was conducted to identify the presence of L. monocytogenes in chicken meat by polymerase chain reaction. 40 samples were collected from different areas of Chennai and were tested for the presence of L. monocytogenes by targeting prfA gene with 290bp by PCR. None of the samples were shown to be positive for L. monocytogenes.

It was our great pleasure to welcome you to the 17th Annual International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC 2006), which was held for the first time in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), during December 18–20, 2006. This is the second ISAAC meeting organized in India; the first one was held in the city of Chennai in 1999. This symposium provided an excellent opportunity for sharing thoughts among the participants on the recent advances in algorithm design and their manifold applications to emerging areas.

Ecologically, Ennore Creek is the most strategic place where many industries started mushrooming in and around the creek in the late 1970s led to meristamatic growth affecting the fishing community (Arunagiri et al., 1998). The environmental degradation of the Ennore Creek is structurally different from the problem of pollution of the metropolitan city of Chennai. This narrow creek is one among the most polluted creeks along the Eastern Coast, which is not only receiving worldwide attention, but also one of the areas demanding intensive research.
