Regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins are gatekeepers regulating the cellular responses induced by G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)-mediated activation of heterotrimeric G proteins. Specifically, RGS proteins determine the magnitude and duration of GPCR signaling by acting as a GTPase-activating protein for Gα subunits, an activity facilitated by their semiconserved RGS domain. The R7 subfamily of RGS proteins is distinguished by two unique domains, DEP/DHEX and GGL, which mediate membrane targeting and stability of these proteins.

Previous results showed that mRNA encoding a putative aquaporin (AQP) (GenBankaccession number AF218314) is present in the tracheolar cells associated with female Aedes aegyptiMalpighian tubules. In this study, immuno-histochemistry detected the protein,AeaAQP, also in tra-cheolar cells, suggesting its involvement in water movement in the respiratory system. When expressed in Xenopus oocytes,AeaAQP increased the osmotic water permeability from15·10 )6 to 150 ·10 )6 mÆs )1 , whichwas inhibited by mercury ions. No permeability to glycerol or other solute was observed....

The structure and membrane interaction of the internal fusion peptide (IFP) fragment of the avian sarcoma and leucosis virus (ASLV) envelope glycoprotein was studied by an array of biophysical methods. The peptide was found to induce lipidmixing of vesicles more strongly than the fusion peptide derived from the N-terminal fusion peptide of influenza virus (HA2-FP). It was observed that the helical structure was enhanced in association with the model membranes, particularly in the N-terminal portion of the peptide.

Ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K) is activated by an array of mitogenic stimuli and is a key player in the regulation of cell growth. The activation process of S6 kinase involves a complex and sequential series of multiple Ser⁄Thr phosphorylations and is mainly mediated via phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-3-phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase-1 (PDK1) and mTor-dependent pathways.

Eph receptor tyrosine kinases regulate many important biological pro-cesses. In the present study, we explored the substrate specificity of the EphA4 receptor tyrosine kinase using peptide arrays. We define a consen-sus substrate motif for EphA4 and go on to identify and test a number of potential EphA4 substrates and map their putative site(s) of phosphoryla-tion.

Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), which is regulated by multiple signal transduction pathways, is the key event in liver fibrosis. Moreover, members of these pathways are important targets for microRNAs (miR-NAs). To better understand the critical pathways of HSC activation, we performed comprehensive comparative bioinformatics analysis of micro-arrays of quiescent and activated HSCs.

Protein kinases drive the cellular signal transduction networks that underlie the regulation of growth, survival and differentiation. To repair the deregu-lations of signaling cascades that are associated with numerous disease states, therapeutic strategies, based on controlling aberrant protein kinase activity, are emerging.

ON THE GROWTH RATE OF GENERALIZED FIBONACCI NUMBERS DONNIELL E. FISHKIND Received 1 May 2004 Let α(t) be the limiting ratio of the generalized Fibonacci numbers produced by summing along lines of slope t through the natural arrayal of Pascal’s triangle. We prove that √ α(t) 3+t is an even function. 1. Overview Pascal’s triangle may be arranged in the Euclidean plane by associating the binomial coefficient ij with the point 1 3 j − i, − i ∈ R2 2 2 √ (1.1) for all nonnegative integers i, j such that j ≤ i, as illustrated in Figure 1.1. The points in R2 associated...

An array is a data structure that contains a number of variables which are accessed through computed indices. The variables contained in an array, also called the elements of the array, are all of the same type, and this type is called the element type of the array. An array has a rank which determines the number of indices associated with each array element. The rank of an array is also referred to as the dimensions of the array. An array with a rank of one is called a single-dimensional array, and an array with a rank greater than one...

Dermatitis herpetiformis. This disorder typically displays pruritic, grouped papulovesicles on elbows, knees, buttocks, and posterior scalp. Vesicles are often excoriated due to associated pruritus. The shape of lesions is also an important feature. Flat, round, erythematous papules and plaques are common in many cutaneous diseases. However, targetshaped lesions that consist in part of erythematous plaques are specific for erythema multiforme (Fig. 52-9). In the same way, the arrangement of individual lesions is important.

Aging and Oral Health While tooth loss and dental disease are not normal consequences of aging, a complex array of structural and functional changes occurs with age that can affect oral health. Subtle changes in tooth structure (e.g., diminished pulp space and volume, sclerosis of dentinal tubules, altered proportions of nerve and vascular pulp content) result in diminished or altered pain sensitivity, reduced reparative capacity, and increased tooth brittleness.
