: Increased availability of genome assemblies for non-model organisms has resulted in invaluable biological and genomic insight into numerous vertebrates, including teleosts. Sequencing of the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) genome and the genomes of many of its relatives (Gadiformes) demonstrated a shared loss of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II genes 100 million years ago. An improved version of the Atlantic cod genome assembly shows an extreme density of tandem repeats compared to other vertebrate genome assemblies.

Temperature adaptation of biological molecules is fundamental in evolutionary studies but remains unsolved. Fishes living in cold water are adapted to low temperatures through adaptive modification of their biological molecules, which enables their functioning in extreme cold. To study nucleotide and amino acid preference in cold-water fishes, we investigated the substitution asymmetry of codons and amino acids in protein-coding DNA sequences between cold-water fishes and tropical fishes.

Kininogens are multifunctional proteins found so far mainly in mammals. They carry vasoactive kinins as well as participate in defense, blood coagulation and the acute phase response. In this study, novel kininogens were isolated from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) and spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minor) by papain-affinity chromatography. The molecular mass of cod kininogen determined by MALDITOF mass spectrometry to be 51.0 kDa and it had pI values of 3.6, 3.9 and 4.4.

The Panel on Seal Management also reviewed the available estimates of the consumption by seals of different fish species and concluded that more information is needed to understand the relationship between seals and their prey. They stated that seals consume large amounts of fish throughout Atlantic Canada, but that there is much less evidence that this predation is having a major impact on the recovery of most commercial fish stocks.

The epidermal mucus of fish species has been found to contain antimicro-bial proteins and peptides, which is of interest in regard to fish immunity. An acidic extract from the epidermal mucus of the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) was found to exhibit antimicrobial activity against Bacillus mega-terium, Escherichia coli andCandida albicans. This activity varied signifi-cantly when salt was added to the antimicrobial assay, and was eliminated by pepsin digestion.

When starting hormonal contraception after POEC (Levonelle 1500® or Levonelle One Step®) additional contraception should be advised until contraceptive efficacy is established (see Summary on page iv). The terms of union of Newfoundland with Canada relinquished full authority for research and management of the marine fi sheries to the Government of Canada in 1949.

Most of it is shallower than 500 m, but a small part is deeper with the Faroe Bank Channel being the deepest passage across the ridge. The upper layers of the waters surrounding the Faroes are dominated by ‘Modified North Atlantic Water’ which derives from the North Atlantic Current flowing towards the east and north-east (Hansen and Østerhus, 2000) (Figure 4.1.1.1, upper left panel).
