Attract Insect
-
Ebook "Invertebrate immunity" gathered scientists who are working with different invertebrates, and it can be seen that the insects are the still attracting most research and researchers. However, an increasing interest is emerging to study new invertebrate groups, especially those where the genome is known, as seen in Chapters 1, 5, 14 and 15.

Wireworms are polyphagous soil-dwelling pests that are hard to control. Attract-and-kill strategies, combining attractive semiochemicals with biocontrol agents, have great promise to control insect pests. We hypothesized that the combination of plant semiochemicals and entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in an attract-and-kill system could greatly enhance the nematodes’ efficiency against wireworms. We evaluated the potential of alginate beads loaded with plant extracts and EPNs to control Agriotes obscurus.

The field and laboratory experiments were carried out with twenty-two brinjal varieties during post–kharif season of 2013-2015 in the Central Research Farm, Gayeshpur, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. The morphological characteristics of brinjal leaves are associated with attraction, feeding and oviposition of the insect pests.

Sexual reproduction in plant is more sensitive to low B, than vegetative growth. Boron needed for growth of the pollen tube during flower pollination and therefore important for good seed set and fruit development. Boron is thought to increase nectar production by flowers, and this attracts pollinating insects. B in crop production is one of the essential micronutrient required for normal growth of most of the crops.

The studies were conducted to determine the impact of pollinators on the production of Pigeonpea, Cajanus cajan L. during 2013-14 and 2014-15. Studies on pollinator complex revealed that C. cajan flowers attracted 15 species of insects belonging to five families, 7 genera and three orders. The insect belongs to order Hymenoptera were most abundant.

Evaluation of light trap against different coloured electric bulbs for trapping phototrophic insects
The present investigation was conducted during November 2014 to April 2015 at the experimental research farm, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (Chhattisgarh). Evaluation of light trap using different coloured lights revealed that ordinary tungsten filament light was found to be most effective (41.54%) followed by yellow (21.83%), blue (13.73%) and green colour light (12.52%), whereas red colour light was least effective (10.36%) based on the number of insects caught in the light trap.

Aonla blossoms attracted total twelve insect species belonged to 5 orders, 7 families and 9 genera. Out of these, Diptera was most diversified and consists of major floral visitors followed by Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and Lepidoptera. Irrespective of different day hours, significantly maximum abundance recorded by Episyrphus sp. followed by Sphaerophora sp. and A. florea. Peak abundance of Episyrphus sp. and A. florea were recorded between 1000h-1200h during full bloom of crop.

Alternative strategies are needed in pest management to protect crops from pests. Occurrence of epiphytic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on crop plants, especially on sites that are selected by pests, may be associated with host selection by insects. We carried out laboratory investigations as well as screen house and field experiments to understand whether epiphytic LAB occur at oviposition sites of agricultural and horticultural crops, probably modulating pest abundance by attraction or repulsion. The diversity of such epiphytic LAB associated with insect oviposition sites is discussed.

Nectar is a major floral attractant and reward for insects that ensures pollination. Liriodendron, a genus of the Magnoliaceae family, includes only two relict species, L. chinense and L. tulipifera, which are considered “basal angiosperms” according to plant evolutionary history.

The present study was conducted to investigate the major constraints faced by the chilli growers of Khammam District of Telangana. Data were collected through personal interview from 112 selected respondents of the ten villages with the help of well-structured questionnaire. Frequency and percentage were used to analyse the collected data. The collected information from the chilli growers revealed that major constraints in adoption of recommended Chilli production technologies were high labour charges (91.07%), high cost of agricultural inputs (83.03%), low market price of chilli (100.

The Terminalia arjuna is an important deciduous tree species in India and is being utilized for both medicinal as well as sericulture purposes. The monoculture nature and continuous use of plantation for rearing of silkworm has profound negative effect on plants vigor, which attract variety of insect pests. Among them, the borer is very important pests on T. arjuna, due to their persistence attacking behavior, mainly on weak and young plants. Among the borer complex, Sphenoptera cupriventris Kerr.

Necrophagous insects are mostly known through forensic entomology. Indeed, experimental data investigating the effect of temperature on larval development underlies post-mortem interval estimations. However, such developmental studies rarely considered the behavior of maggots. In contrast, previous results supposed that calliphoridae larvae use behavioral strategies to optimize their development on carcasses. To test this idea, we analyzed the trade-off between thermal regulation (individual thermal preferences) and social behavior (aggregation) in Lucilia sericata larvae.

Olfactory cues have a large impact on insect behaviour and fitness consequently showing potential in pest management. Yeast released volatiles are used by insects as olfactory cues for finding feeding and oviposition sites. The yeast strain SB-16-15 was isolated from spontaneous fermentation of Hippophae rhamnoides berries and identified as Pichia kudriavzevii. Thirty-nine volatiles were sampled from the headspace of P. kudriavzevii yeasts by solid phase micro extraction and identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques.

In this paper we present the results of original research in applying electronic - automation techniques to create traps to catch and kill harmful insects. The techniques base on living habit of some Insect Pests of Tea. The traps are supplied by solar energy. These traps can also be used to catch several other kinds of harmful insects such as mosquitoes, flies.

Regulated gene expression may substantially enhance gene therapy. Corre-lated with structural differences between insect ecdysteroids and mamma-lian steroids, the ecdysteroids appear to have a benign pharmacology without adversely interfering with mammalian signaling systems. Conse-quently, the ecdysone receptor-based gene switches are attractive for appli-cation in medicine.

The subject of preventive medicine is one that is attracting world-wide attention to-day. We can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing the subject discussed in some of its phases, and during the last few years several books have appeared devoted wholly or in part to the ways of preventing rather than curing many of our ills. Looking over the titles of these articles and books the reader will at once be impressed with the importance that is being given to the subject of the relation of insects to some of our common diseases.

Phenolic compounds represent a large group of molecules with a variety of functions in plant growth, development, and defense. Phenolic compounds include signaling molecules, pigments and flavors that can attract or repel, as well as compounds that can protect the plant against insects, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Most phenolic compounds are present as esters or glycosides rather than as free compounds. Tannins and lignin are phenolic polymers.
