Automorphism Group

The paper extends author’s method of modular distributions to arithmetic automorphic L functions on general classical groups. Main resultat gives a p-adic interpolation of their critical L values in the form of integrals of distributions constructed from a given eigen function of Hecke algebras by applying BGG modules.

Earlier such results were obtained for Frobenius groups of automorphisms; new theorems for Frobenius-like groups are based on new representation-theoretic results. Apart from a brief survey, the paper contains the new theorem on almost nilpotency of a finite group admitting a Frobenius-like group of automorphisms with fixed-point-free almost extraspecial kernel.

A compact Riemann surface X of genus g is called an (M−1)-surface if it admits an anticonformal involution that fixes g simple closed curves, the second maximum number by Harnack’s theorem. In this paper we investigate the automorphism groups of (M−1)- surfaces with the M-property.

D. Mumford conjectured in [33] that the rational cohomology of the stable moduli space of Riemann surfaces is a polynomial algebra generated by certain classes κi of dimension 2i. For the purpose of calculating rational cohomology, one may replace the stable moduli space of Riemann surfaces by BΓ∞ , where Γ∞ is the group of isotopy classes of automorphisms of a smooth oriented connected surface of “large” genus. Tillmann’s theorem [44] that the plus construction makes BΓ∞ into an infinite loop space led to a stable homotopy version of Mumford’s conjecture, stronger than the original [24]. .

The theory of automorphic functions in one complex variable was created during the second half of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. Important contributions are due to such illustrious mathematicians as F. Klein, P. Koebe and H. Poincare. Two sources may be traced: the uniformization theory of algebraic functions, and certain topics in number theory. Automorphic functions with respect to groups with compact quotient space on the one hand and elliptic modular functions on the other are examples of these two aspects.
