  • Banana (Musa spp.) is one of the most important commercial fruit crops especially in the tropics. Of the many diseases occurring on banana, sigatoka leaf spot disease incited by Mycosphaerella musicola Leach, is considered as serious threat to world banana production. Given the importance of yellow Sigatoka in banana plantations and lack of information on its epidemiology, the present study was conducted to assess the incidence of Sigatoka leaf spot in banana plants cultivated through organics manures and inorganic fertilizer.

  • Rhizome rot or tip over disease of banana has been occurring in serious form and affecting the yield wherever bananas are being cultivated. The morphological characteristics of the eighteen isolates of the bacterium revealed that cells were rod shaped, occurred singly, Gram negative and peritrichously flagellated. The pathogen was identified on the basis of cultural, morphological and biochemical characteristics and its pathogenicity in banana was proved using Koch‟s postulates.

  • The study was undertaken to isolate the DNA of good quality from the banana wilt pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) directly from infected tissues for molecular studies. In this method, laborious and time-consuming procedures such as isolation of the pathogen and its artificial cultivation are avoided. Moreover, grinding of the fungal mycelium using liquid nitrogen is also not needed as the DNA is directly extracting from infected banana tissues.

  • Globally, banana is the maximum distributed fruit crop and is the fourth most important commodity and is grown in more than 130 countries across the world, continuously exhibiting a spectacular growth pattern worldwide in an area of 6507.7 million ha producing 98946 million tones. India is the largest producer of banana in the world. There are diverse germplasms of banana traditionally cultivated in different regions of India having remarkable genetic differences. Traditional procedure to characterize banana plants by morphological descriptors has many limitations.

  • The field experiment was conducted at the Research Farm, BCKV, West Bengal to study the yield and economics for banana cultivation with drip fertigation. The drip fertigation was done at four evapotranspiration (ET) based irrigation levels (D1=0.6 ET, D2=0.8 ET, D3=1.0 ET for drip and surface irrigation (S) at IW/CPE 1.0) and at three fertilizer levels of recommended doses of fertilizer (RDF) viz., F1=60% RDF, F2=80% RDF and F3=100% RDF laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications.

  • The cultivar Robusta forms the mainstay of commercial banana cultivation in India. An efficient micropropagation system with high multiplication rate will boost banana cultivation and assist banana based industries in the country. The shoot apices of banana cv. Robusta were cultured on two basal media MS and B5 supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of plant growth regulators (PGR). The tissue culture responses were observed for shoot multiplication and effect of subculture on rate of shoot multiplication till 8th subculture.
