Banana fiber

This article introduces the research results on designing and manufacturing a banana fiber extraction machine for the production of handicrafts on a small to medium scale in Vietnam. The machine was designed through calculations, model building, and software testing before being manufactured and assembled.

A study was undertaken to manage two factors that are responsible for reduced market value in banana cv. Yelakki namely ethylene biosynthesis and microbial deterioration. Freshly harvested stage 2 banana fruits treated with chemicals, 1-methylcyclopropene (1- MCP) and poly hexa methylene guanidine (PHMG) at different concentrations and stored in corrugated fiber board boxes at ambient condition for 15 days.

Ethylene inhibitor compound 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), sanitizer chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) were studied to know the postharvest behavior and storage life of banana fruits (cultivar Yelakki), harvested at second stage of its ripening. Banana fruits were pretreated with the above chemicals either singly or in combination and stored in corrugated fiber board boxes at ambient condition. The 1-MCP treatment had delayed the colour change of peel as well as fruit softening and extended t h e shelf life by suppressing the respiration.

Beverages are no longer considered as thirst-quenchers; consumers look for specific functionality and it becomes a part of their lifestyle. In recent years, these changes and developments have led to newer products. Red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is a rich source of dietary nitrate which significantly reduces systolic blood pressure in humans. Banana (Musa spp.) is a major source of potassium and total dietary fibers. Spray-drying is one of the highly utilized techniques to increase the shelf-life of food products.

Banana pseudostem comprises several polymers such as cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin and lignin that constitute fibers with good mechanical properties. These sugars can be used for production of various organic acids and alcohol. With the availability of such huge biomass as substrate, a wide range of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi grow on it. Lactic acid bacteria can grow on such sugars and can be isolated from banana pseudostem. In present study, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from banana pseudostem core using MRS agar.
