The objectives of this thesis are: To determine shareholder wealth effects in relation to the announcement of inclusion in a social index; to understand the determinants of the valuation effect due to inclusion in a social index; to investigate the mediating role of institutional investors; to address the endogeneity issue that is inherent in our study; to test whether CSR is a strategic engagement by firms to retain market value.

This dissertation aims to prove that individuals make irrational decisions when under such circumstances as uncertainty and risk. The research conducted assesses forty-two Irish professionals and their behaviour while making decisions pertaining specifically to that of investing in stocks and shares. In particular, the dissertation focuses predominantly on one aspect of Behavioural Finance i.e. the sunk-cost fallacy. Other biases such as overconfidence bias, regret aversion, mental accounting and so on are also considered.

The purpose of this research is to analyse the attitudes and believes of Irish investors towards green and ethical investments. Why they invest in green, is it profit maximisation or ethical considerations and what are the barriers for green investments. How feasible is the government policy and targets set for greening the Irish economy by 2020.
