  • Low-cost activated carbon (AC) samples obtained from waste coffee grounds were used for CO2 and CH4 adsorption. ACs were prepared by chemical activation and carbonized at three different temperatures. AC carbonized at 800◦C showed a relatively high surface area (582.92 m2 g−1) and high adsorption capacities of 2.6 mmol g−1 and 1.1 mmol g−1 at 25◦C for CO2 and CH4, respectively. Adsorbent samples were prepared by loading of Fe3+ metal ions onto ACs and their adsorption capacities were compared with those of nonloaded ACs.

  • The study revealed that the pH of cow-dung slurry at the beginning was 7.8; neem-cake, 5.0 and pongamia-cake, 5.8 suggesting significant differences in pH among the bio-gas substrates used. Two months after anaerobicdigestion, there was increase in pH with increase in the proportion of cow-dung and also increase in total-N and P in biogas spent slurry after anaerobic-digestion. There was no definite trend with reference to total-K.

  • The bio-recovery of three different oil-polluted tropical soils – RS (oil-polluted soil sample from River state), LS (soil sample from NNPC depot, Lagos) and POS (oil-polluted soil sample from Oriade L.G.A., Lagos) by manure amendment was studied for eight weeks. The rates of crude oil biodegradation after manure application as quantified by Gas chromatographic analysis of residual total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) showed the same trend of decrease in the total petroleum hydrocarbons in both the LS and RS series.

  • Production of biofuels, especially bio-ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass, holds remarkable potential to meet the current energy demand as well as to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions for a sustainable clean environment. Rice is one of the most important agricultural crops in India. Rice straw is an important residue which is generated in large amount in India. Every kilogram of grain harvesting is accompanied by the production of rice straw to a tune of 1.0–1.5 kg. Major proportion of the rice straw is burnt in the field itself.
