In this study, we synthesized magnetic activated carbon (MAC) derived from Litsea glutinosa seeds, which was applied to eliminate methylene blue and nickel ions in the aeration tank of the biological treatment system. Structural characteristics and adsorption properties of MAC were studied. The obtained results revealed that the removal efficiency of these pollutants significantly improved as a combination of MAC and activated sludge, especially in the case of nickel ions removal.

Ebook "Tropical agroforestry" strives to provide up-to-date information on tropical agroforestry to serve as educational material in the tropical context. The authoritative textbook of Nair (1993) on agroforestry was published 18 years ago, and before the advent of tree domestication, an important agroforestry practice today. In addition, many other research activities, such as carbon sequestration and integrated pest management, have been included in the agroforestry agenda.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the potential biological activities of black cumin seed oil (BCSO) and wheat germ oil (WGO) on different cell lines. Initially, commercially available BCSO and WGO obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction were analyzed in terms of tocopherol, aliphatic alcohols, and thymoquinone content via HPLC and GC analysis. Cell free antioxidant activities and total phenolic content of both oils were detected by DPPH assay and Folin–Ciocalteu method, respectively.

The therapeutic applications of 1,2,4-triazoles motivated us to synthesize some new derivatives. Two series of S -substituted derivatives (8a–8j, 12a–12i) of 5-{1-[(4-chlorophenyl)sulfonyl]-3-piperidinyl}-4-phenyl-4H -1,2,4-triazol3-thiol (6) have been synthesized and evaluated for their biological potential.

The discovery of enzyme targeting inhibitors is a popular area of drug research. Biological activities of the compounds bearing phenol and heteroaryl groups make them popular groups in drug design targeting important enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE, E.C.3.1.1.7) and carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1). The compounds 2 and 4 were found potent AChE inhibitors with the Ki values of 22.13 ±1.96 nM and 23.71 ±2.95 nM, respectively, while the compounds 2 (Ki = 8.61 ±0.90 nM, on hCA I) and 1 (Ki = 8.76 ±0.84 nM, on hCA II) had considerable CAs inhibitory potency.

The investigation of carbonic anhydrase and paraoxonase enzyme inhibition properties of water-soluble zinc and gallium phthalocyanine complexes (1 and 2) are reported for the first time. The binding of p-sulfonylphenoxy moieties to the phthalocyanine structure favors excellent solubilities in water, as well as providing an inhibition effect on carbonic anhydrase (CA) I and II isoenzymes and paraoxonase (PON1) enzyme. According to biological activity results, both complexes inhibited hCA I, hCA II, and PON1.

In the present study, the properties of calcium carbonate mineralization and urease and carbonic anhydrase activities of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens U17 isolated from calcareous soil of Denizli (Turkey) were analyzed. CaCO3 was produced in all growth phases. Strain U17 showed 0.615 ± 0.092 µmol/min/mg urease enzyme activity in calcium mineralization medium and 1.315 ± 0.021 µmol/min/mg urease enzyme activity in Luria-Bertani medium supplemented with urea, whereas it showed 36.03 ± 5.48 nmol/min/ mg carbonic anhydrase enzyme activity in CaCO3 precipitation medium and 28.82 ± 3.

In this study, 341 Bacillus sp. strains were isolated from agricultural soils of Turkey. The potent extracellular lipase producer was selected. It was identified by 16S rRNA, named as Bacillus cereus ATA179. Optimal nutritional and physical parameters for lipase production were determined. Sucrose as the carbon source, (NH4 )2 HPO4 as the nitrogen source, CaCl2 as the metal ion were obtained. The best results of physical parameters were stated at 45°C, pH 7.0, shaking rate 50 rpm, inoculation amount 7% and inoculum age 24 h.

Weather change in high-altitude areas subjects mature tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to cold stress, which damages tobacco leaf yield and quality. A brupt diurnal temperature differences (the daily temperature dropping more than 20 °C) along with rainfall in tobacco-growing areas at an altitude above 2450 m, caused cold stress to field-grown tobacco.

Adsorption of Cr(VI) from water sample onto the activated carbon cloth with an oxidized surface area
In this study, the initial concentration of Cr(VI), the pH, the adsorption time and the temperature were all looked at as possible factors that influence the efficiency of Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and removal. The Freundlich isotherm provided the best correlation for adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the adsorbents.

Adsorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions using activated carbon derived from coffee husks
The adsorption of methylene blue (MB) onto activated carbon (AC) derived from coffee husk using zinc chloride activation at 600 oC was studied. The effects of various parameters such as contact time, initial MB concentration and temperature were investigated. The adsorption kinetics of pseudo first-order and pseudo second-order were used for the kinetic studies and were found to follow the pseudo second-order kinetic model.

During vermicomposting, decomposition of organic matter is mostly carried out by the aerobic microbes, facilitated by the earthworms. Light, an important ecological factor can penetrate up to 3-4 cm into surface soil or organic substrates and therefore is expected to influence the biological function of microbes during decomposition.
