Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is a unique vegetable-fruit possessing several multifarious health benefits. In this study, the plant extraction obtained from grafted bitter gourd onto pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) and nongrafted bitter gourd cultivated under greenhouse conditions were evaluated for their constituents of volatile compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPMEGC-MS) techniques were employed to determine these compounds in the leaves (young, middle, and old-age) and fruits (unripe and ripe) of bitter gourd.

The preferred choice for molecular marker development is identifying existing variation in populations through DNA sequencing. With the genome resources currently available for bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), it is now possible to detect genome-wide insertion-deletion (InDel) polymorphisms among bitter gourd populations, which guides the efficient development of InDel markers.

In recent times, there has been growing recognition of the key role of foods and beverages in disease prevention and treatment. Thus, the production and consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with reduction of occurrence of various degenerative diseases due to presence of antioxidants like Vitamin C and phenolics etc. in them. Bitter gourd fruit (Momordica charantia L.) has been reported to contain many nutraceutical compounds and possess antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity.

Nine diverse genotypes of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) were crossed during summer season of 2015 in diallel design (excluding reciprocals). The resultant 36 hybrids along with the parents were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications during Kharif 2015 at Horticulture farm, S.K.N. College of Agriculture, Jobner. Each parents/F1 were sown in furrow maintaining 2.25m x 0.75m spacing. The analysis of variance for experimental design revealed the existence of adequate genetic variability in experimental material for all traits under study.

Cucurbits comprise 117 genera and 825 species. Out of this 30 species of nine genera are used as cultivated plants. Most of the cucurbits viz., cucumber, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, snake gourd, water melon and muskmelons are monoecious and annul in habit. However plants like pointed gourd, spine gourd, ivy gourd and chow-chow are dioecious and perennials. It is of high market demand with a special delicacy for the people of India and it fetches premium price in the market.

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) is a monoecious and cross pollinated crop with a high degree of variability, having enormous chances of either exploiting hybrid vigour or selection in segregating population. Information on different qualitative and quantitative characters with respect to genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance are of great interest to plant breeders as they play a vital role in the development of a successful crop improvement programme.

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantiaL.) is an important cucurbitaceous plant in which the deleterious diseases namely vascular wilt, damping off occurs commonly and causes 30 to 50 percent losses in crop. The present investigation was aimed to study the morphological and molecular characterization of disease causing pathogen to understand the etiology of the disease. Survey was conducted at different locations of Coimbatore, Erode and Dharmapuri and samples were collected for the isolation of the pathogen.

The present investigation was carried out involving thirty hybrids which were derived by crossing ten lines with three testers. These hybrids were evaluated along with their parents in randomized block design (RBD) with three replications. The recorded data was subjected to Line × Tester analysis. The analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that the mean sum of squares due to parents and hybrids were highly significant for almost all the characters except for days required to 50% pistillate flowering, vine length, number of primary branches per plant and internodal length.

Momordica cymbalaria Fenzl. is a perennial herbaceous climber belongs to cucurbitaceae family and the genus of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia). Fruits are used as vegetables, it possess hypoglycaemic, hypolipidemic, cardio protective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective and antioxidant properties. It is rich in crude fiber (6.42 g/100 g), calcium (72 g/100g), potassium, sodium and vitamin C (290 g/100g).The major constraints in propagation of Momordica cymbalaria are non-availability of standardized propagation methods and low yield.

Studies have revealed that edible coatings particularly Carnuba wax and chitosan can be used as postharvest treatment for enhancing the storability of bitter gourd gourd fruits under ambient storage conditions (temperature 27.4-32.3°C and 70-81% RH).There were seven treatments, replicated thrice and experiment was laid out in completely randomized design. The bitter gourd fruits coated with 1.0% Carnuba wax maintained higher sensory score of 6.67 in storage.
