Bitter melon

Momordica charantia L. (bitter melon) is a plant belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family and is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. The aim of this study is to find out the antibacterial activity of the bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) and investigate the chemical components of this plant.

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is a unique vegetable-fruit possessing several multifarious health benefits. In this study, the plant extraction obtained from grafted bitter gourd onto pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) and nongrafted bitter gourd cultivated under greenhouse conditions were evaluated for their constituents of volatile compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPMEGC-MS) techniques were employed to determine these compounds in the leaves (young, middle, and old-age) and fruits (unripe and ripe) of bitter gourd.

In this study, the total phenolic contents and total antioxidant capacities of some commercial bitter melon products (powder, packaged powder, capsule, paste in olive oil), and of unripe and ripe fruits were determined by spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods. The total antioxidant capacities of unripe and ripe bitter melon samples, determined by using the CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity assay) and ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazolin-6-sulfonic acid))/HRP (horseradish peroxidase) methods, were 42.5 and 36.3 µmol TRE (Trolox equivalent) g–1, and 8.7 and 7.

The main use parts of the tree are fruit, stem, and leaf that can be eaten as vegetables. This study aims to (1) identify several bioactive chemical compounds in the stems and leaves of bitter melon trees in the forests in the district of Mang Yang, Gia Lai province; (2) evaluate the nutrient composition, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial ability of fresh juice and extract with ethanol 70°.

The aim of the present study is to explore more about the free radical scavenging activity of medicinal plants which are based on non-toxic and advantageous secondary metabolites. For the very first time, this plant found particularly in and around Chitrakoot region (Madhya Pradesh, India) was inspected for their free radical scavenging activity by DPPH and ABTS methods. The significance of the present work is that it gives a clue about the radical scavenging properties of the selected plants, which are easily available and widely used by local people.

Cucurbits comprise 117 genera and 825 species. Out of this 30 species of nine genera are used as cultivated plants. Most of the cucurbits viz., cucumber, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, snake gourd, water melon and muskmelons are monoecious and annul in habit. However plants like pointed gourd, spine gourd, ivy gourd and chow-chow are dioecious and perennials. It is of high market demand with a special delicacy for the people of India and it fetches premium price in the market.

Plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) enhance the plant growth and productivity through wide variety of mechanism. The strains isolated from rhizosphere of Momordica charantia, mainly belonged to Bacillus, Azotobacter, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter. Nearly 50% isolates of Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter and all the isolates of Bacillus and Azotobacter were able to solubilise tricalcium phosphate.

Obesity is often accompanied by increased risk of metabolic disorders. Increased body and tissue weight is a hallmark of obesity. In the current study, we assessed if bitter melon extract supplement attenuated the high-fat diet induced obesity. Male Swiss mice fed a high-fat diet for 11 weeks parallelly with a bitter melon extract supplement via arbitrarily drinking and were compared with the nonsupplemented control group.
