Brown plant hopper Nilaparvata lugens
-
The brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens, is one of the major pest of rice (Oryza sativa). Plant defenses against insect herbivores have been extensively studied, but our understanding of insect responses to host plants’ resistance mechanisms is still limited.

Agriculture is the most important sector of Indian Economy. Indian agriculture sector accounts for 18 per cent of India's gross domestic product (GDP) and provides employment to 50% of the countries workforce. Among cereals, Rice (Oryza sativa I.) is the most important cereal crop of the world both in respect to area and production. The total Rice production in the world is 496.22 million metric tons as estimated by the United states Department of Agriculture in April 2020 (USDA). India ranks second in rice production in the world with the production of 116.42 million metric tons.

The experiment was conducted in glasshouse to compare the efficacy of Buprofezin 25SC insecticide sold by the different manufacturers under different trade names against brown plant hopper Nilaparvata lugens Stal. (BPH) on rice cultivar TN-1 at Department of Entomology, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, India for two cropping seasons during kharif 2011 and 2012.

Brown plant hopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stal is one of the most serious rice pest in India. Growing of resistance varieties is the most effective and environment-friendly strategy for protecting the crop from BPH. In the present study we evaluated the forty entries of plant hopper screening trial against BPH under glass house condition. The trial material was received from All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Programme (AICRIP) DRR, Hyderabad during kharif 2011.

Present investigation includes anatomical study of wild rice accessions at internodes position were carried out to understand the relationship between plant anatomy and resistance against Brown plant hopper. This study includes thickness of epidermis and distance between epidermis and vascular bundle and the corresponding evaluation of accessions through seed box technique.

Hence, present study was undertaken on DNA molecular characterization of BPH population using SSR markers that will give clear understanding of BPH diversity in Gangavathi region. Ten SSR markers were screened in the selected 25 BPHs and all ten markers were screened to assess the molecular diversity.Genotyping data of SSR markers were analyzed using Unweight pair group method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) method using DARwin V6.0.

Evaluation of resistance in some rice genotypes against brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal)
Studies were carried out under glass house conditions to study the evaluation of resistance in some rice genotypes against Brown plant hopper, Nilaparvata lugens. Among the rice genotypes tested against N. lugens (Stal), Ptb 33 (the resistant check) lowest mean damage rating (1.00), while genotypes, PTB 41 exhibited a damage score ranging from (1.00-1.67), when compared to T(N)1 (9.00).The genotypes viz., Co 43, ADT 36, Columbia, Swarna, SR 26B were moderately resistant with damage rating of (3.00-3.67) and the remaining genotypes were moderately susceptible or highly susceptible.

A glass house experiment was conducted at Department of Entomology, IGKV, Raipur (Chhattisgarh), during 2014-15 to evaluate different rice genotypes for brown planthopper (BPH) resistance. A total of 392 rice genotypes were evaluated, of which 58 were from IRRI, 78 were aromatic types and rest 256 represented the local germplasm. Of 58 rice genotypes from International Rice Research Institute six viz. Ptb 33 (0.17), IR 03A159 (0.45), IR 09N522 (0.66), IR 07A179 (0.67), IR 08N136 (0.90) and IR 09N538 (0.91), were found to be highly resistant to BPH while 32.7% were resistant.
