Paper and pulp mills discharge large volumes of wastewater into the environment. Crop productivity can be improved by using this wastewater, which is rich in salts and nutrients, as an irrigation source improves crop productivity by supplying enormous amount of nutrients. But for a long termit leads to development of soil salinity and sodicity and also calcareousness.

Sodic soils are characterized by adverse physical conditions with high sodium build up. These soils can be put to crop production only when they are reclaimed using calcium bearing chemical amendments. In this regard, attempts were made to study utilization of distillery spent wash to reclaim sodic soil and calcareous sodic soil.

A detailed soil survey was undertaken in central state farm Jetsar, Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India representing the arid climate with the aim of to assess the status and potential of land resources for the suitability and production potential of soils for chickpea. The area of the farm has been divided into three major landforms viz., sand dunes, reclaimed sand dunes and aeofluvial flood plain. Based on the variation in physiography and landforms, eight soil pedons were identified in the farm.
