In this paper we review some of the novel aspects of cannabis and cannabinoids in relation to their legal situation, changes in their composition and forms of cannabis use, the concept of medical cannabis, and synthetic cannabinoids as new psychoactive substances (NPS).

Cannabinoids elicit complex hemodynamic responses in experimental animals that involve both peripheral and central sites. Centrally administered cannabinoids have been shown to predominantly cause pressor response. However, very little is known about the mechanism of the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R)-centrally evoked pressor response. In this review, we provided an overview of the contemporary knowledge regarding the cannabinoids centrally elicited cardiovascular responses and the possible underlying signaling mechanisms.

Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) is expressed predominantly in the immune system, particularly in plasma cells, raising the possibility that targeting the CB2 pathway could yield an immunomodulatory effect. Although the role of CB2 in mediating immunoglobulin class switching has been reported, the effects of targeting the CB2 pathway on immunoglobulin secretion per se remain unclear.

The anti-tumor properties of cannabinoids have been investigated in many in vitro and in vivo studies. Many of these anti-tumor effects are mediated via cannabinoid receptor types 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2), comprising the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Less than 20 years ago the field of cannabis and the cannabinoids was still considered a minor, somewhat quaint, area of research. A few groups were active in the field, but it was already being viewed as stagnating. The chemistry of cannabis was well known, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), identified in 1964, being the only major psychoactive constituent and cannabidiol, which is not psychoactive, possibly contributing to some of the effects. These cannabinoids and several synthetic analogs had been thoroughly investigated for their pharmacological effects.

Public opinion on the medical value of marijuana has been sharply divided. Some dismiss medical marijuana as a hoax that exploits our natural compassion for the sick; others claim it is a uniquely soothing medicine that has been withheld from patients through regulations based on false claims. Proponents of both views cite “scientific evidence” to support their views and have expressed those views at the ballot box in recent state elections.

The endocannabinoid system is a conserved system involved in the modula-tion of several physiologic processes, from the activity of the central ner-vous system to reproduction. Type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CNR1) cDNA was cloned from the brain and testis of the anuran amphibian, the frog Rana esculenta.

We have investigated the existence of a precoupled form of the distal C-ter-minal truncated cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1-417) and heterotrimeric G proteins in a heterologous insect cell expression system. CB1-417 showed higher production levels than the full-length receptor. The production lev-els obtained in our expression system were double the values reported in the literature.

Loss of cannabinoid receptors (CB1) occurs prior to neuro-degeneration in Huntington’s disease (HD). The levels and distribution of CB1 RNA were equivalent in 3-week-old mice regardless of genotype demonstrating that the specific factors and appropriate chromatin structure that lead to the transcription ofCB1were present in the striatum of young R6/2 and R6/1 transgenic HD mice.

“Legal highs” are novel psychoactive substances that have evaded statutory control. Synthetic cannabinoid compounds with adamantane moieties have recently been identified, which have high potency at target receptors and are undetectable on conventional toxicology testing.

Introduction: The plant Cannabis sativa L. has a long history for human being since about BC 2000 for its use as fiber material, food and folk medicine; cannabis (hemp, marijuana) means the whole plant itself and its dried products except for its stem and seeds. The word “hashish” is mainly used for the resin of the cannabis plant.

Thus, in living cells, the rates of anterograde and retrograde transport between the two organelles appear to have a substantial effect on the morphology of the Golgi. The effect of the balance between anterograde and retrograde transport on the morphology of the ER remains to be explored. Recently, increasing evidence has suggested that alteration in Golgi morphology during mitosis is not a passive process but rather an active one, which is highly coordinated with entry into mitosis and its progression.

The life cycle of the retrovirus consist of several steps. It begins with the binding of the viral envelope to cellular receptors, which enables fusion of the viral envelope with the cellular membrane. Consequently, the viral particle is uncoated, liberating the viral core into the cell cytoplasm. The viral DNA is reverse transcribed to DNA. Then, the viral DNA is transported to the nucleus where it is integrated into the host cell’s genome. From there, viral DNA is transcribed to RNA, some of which is translated to proteins.

Acute haematogenous osteomyelitis refers to infection of bone resulting from bacteria in the bloodstream. This is seen most often in children, with initial infection thought to occur in the richly vascularised metaphyseal region (Gutierrez, 2005). Children are thought to experience frequent episodes of bacteraemia, often with no apparent symptoms, leading to seeding and development of osteomyelitis (Conrad, 2010). The pathogenesis of this process has been theoretically described.
