This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of Cobalt chloride (CoCl2) on cardiac mitochondrial function in an in vitro model. In the study, H9C2 cardiomyocytes were cultured in a medium containing different concentrations of CoCl2. Cell viability, cardiolipin content, mitochondrial function, and mitochondrial oxidative stress were assessed by using Cell Counting Kit-8 and suitable fluorescence kits.

According to gene enrichment analysis, PPAR pathway, cardiac muscle contraction, and cytokinecytokine receptor interaction were the most enriched pathways. Besides, the nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway and hematopoietic cell linage pathways were also enriched. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is enriched among KEGG disease pathways. RT-qPCR assays confirmed the RNA-Seq results. This study opens a new window toward the biological functions of Bex2 in different systems.

Cellular manifestations of aging are most pronounced in postmitotic cells, such as neurons and cardiac myocytes. Alterations of these cells, which are responsible for essential functions of brain and heart, are particularly important contributors to the overall aging process. Mitochondria and lysosomes of postmitotic cells suffer the most remarkable age-related alterations of all cellular organelles.

There are at least three well-defined signalling cascades engaged directly in the physiological regulation of cardiac circulatory function: theb1-adrenoceptors that control the cardiac contractile apparatus, the renin-angiotensin-aldo-sterone system involved in regulating bloodpressure and the natriuretic peptides contributing at least to the factors determining circulating volume.

Activation of a calcium-sensing receptor (Ca-SR) leads to increased intracellular calcium concentration and altered cellular activities. The expression of Ca-SR has been iden-tified in both nonexcitable and excitable cells, including neurons and smooth muscle cells. Whether Ca-SR was expressed and functioning in cardiac myocytes remained unclear. In the present study, the transcripts of Ca-SR were identified in rat heart tissues usingRT-PCRthat was further confirmed by sequence analysis.

We investigated structural and functional aspects of the first mutation in TNNC1, coding for the calcium-binding subunit (cTnC) of cardiac tropo-nin, which was detected in a patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy [Hoffmann B, Schmidt-Traub H, Perrot A, Osterziel KJ & Gessner R (2001) Hum Mut17, 524]. This mutation leads to a leucine–glutamine exchange at position 29 in the nonfunctional calcium-binding site of cTnC.

The existence of an inducible mitochondrial nitric oxide synthase has been recently related to the nitrosative⁄oxidative damage and mitochondrial dys-function that occurs during endotoxemia. Melatonin inhibits both inducible nitric oxide synthase and inducible mitochondrial nitric oxide synthase activities, a finding related to the antiseptic properties of the indoleamine.

Voltage-gated potassium (KV) channels can form heteromultimeric com-plexes with a variety of accessory subunits, including KCNE proteins. Het-erologous expression studies have demonstrated diverse functional effects of KCNE subunits on several KV channels, including KCNQ1 (KV7.1) that, together with KCNE1, generates the slow-delayed rectifier current (IKs) important for cardiac repolarization.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and its homologue angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) are critical counter-regulatory enzymes of the renin–angiotensin system, and have been implicated in cardiac function, renal disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis and acute lung injury.

A multiprotein complex encompassing a transcription regulator, cardiac ankyrin repeat protein (CARP), and the calpain 3 protease was identified in the N2A elastic region of the giant sarcomeric protein titin. The present study aimed to investigate the function(s) of this complex in the skeletal muscle. We demonstrate that CARP subcellular localization is controlled by the activity of calpain 3: the higher the calpain 3, the more important the sarcomeric retention of CARP.

The cardiac hormones atrial natriuretic peptide and B-type natriuretic pep-tide (brain natriuretic peptide) activate guanylyl cyclase (GC)-A⁄natriuretic peptide receptor-A (NPRA) and produce the second messenger cGMP. GC-A⁄NPRA is a member of the growing family of GC receptors.
