Ebook "Nutrient use efficiency in plants: Concepts and approaches" presents a broad overview of topics related to improvement of nutrient use efficiency of crops. Nutrient use efficiency (NUE) is a measure of how well plants use the available mineral nutrients. It can be defined as yield (biomass) per unit input (fertilizer, nutrient content). NUE is a complex trait: it depends on the ability to take up the nutrients from the soil, but also on transport, storage, mobilization, usage within the plant, and even on the environment.

Ebook "Green biomass pretreatment for biofuels production" emphasises the tactical mobile and on-farm scales applications that use green pretreatments and processing technologies without the need of on-site waste treatment. Because of the varieties of different biomasses, no single pretreatment is expected to be the universal choice. Some of the pretreatment methods present niche applications are also discussed.

Residual biomass production for fuel conversion represents a unique opportunity to avoid concerns about compromising food supply by using dedicated feedstock crops. Developing tomato varieties suitable for both food consumption and fuel conversion requires the establishment of new selection methods.

Cultivation technology of Chlorella vulgaris shows great potential in wastewater treatment along with biomass collection for biofuel production. Suspended, autotrophic cultivation at various scales is still the main method to increase algal biomass in different stages of algae technology. In this study, C. vulgaris was cultured to proliferate in a 2 l suspension system to prepare biomass for immobilised cultivation in a biofilm photobioreactor.

Results showed that increasing in rotational speed from 0 rpm to 200 rpm converted cellulose-producing cells to non-cellulose-producing ones, leading to a significant decline in BC film formation. The increase in initial inoculum size from 0.01 g/L to 0.1 g/L reduced sugar concentration and surface area of the medium, and therefore inhibiting the formation of film-like cellulosic biomass.

The amount of viable cells increased at first (until the saturation of the culture fluid with nucleic acids), and then began to gradually decrease. The obtained results can serve as a starting point for further studies of the possibility of stimulating the primary accumulation of biomass of micromycetes by ultrasound.

Melia azedarach L. is a multipurpose timber tree that is important in forestry plantations. Genetic modification to improve the growth rate and wood quality is important to produce new cultivars of M. azedarach. In this study, the effects of AtGA20ox gene expression on plant growth, wood formation, and biomass production in transgenic M. azedarach plants were investigated. AtGA20ox was inserted into the binary vector pBI101 under the control of the xylem specific promoter CAD4 and transferred to M. azedarach via Agrobacterium-mediated method.

Transcriptome profiling of Brassica napus stem sections in relation to differences in lignin content
Brassica crops are cultivated widely for human consumption and animal feed purposes, and oilseed rape/canola (Brassica napus and rapa) is the second most important oilseed worldwide. Because of its natural diversity and genetic complexity, genomics studies on oilseed rape will be a useful resource base to modify the quantity and quality of biomass in various crops, and therefore, should have a positive impact on lignocellulosic biofuel production.

Emissions from diesel vehicles and biomass burning are the principal sources of primary ultrafine particles (UFP). The exposure to UFP has been associated to cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, including lung cancer. Although many aspects of the toxicology of ambient particulate matter (PM) have been unraveled, the molecular mechanisms activated in human cells by the exposure to UFP are still poorly understood.

Lignin deposited in plant cell walls negatively affects biomass conversion into advanced bioproducts. There is therefore a strong interest in developing bioenergy crops with reduced lignin content or altered lignin structures.

Lead (Pb) is a harmful pollutant that disrupts normal functions from the cell to organ levels. Salix babylonica is characterized by high biomass productivity, high transpiration rates, and species specific Pb. Better understanding the accumulating and transporting Pb capability in shoots and roots of S. babylonica, the toxic effects of Pb and the subcellular distribution of Pb is very important.

Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases, they are involved in tumor growth, and the processes of invasion and metastasis. Cordyceps spp. were recorded to have the anticancer potential. In previous studies, extracts from Cordyceps neovolkiana strain DL0004 and Cordyceps takaomontana strain DL0038A were capable of cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 and Jurkat cell lines. In this study, 26 extracts were prepared from biomasses and fruit bodies of C. neovolkiana DL0004 and C.

Zinc is required for plant growth, as an activator of several enzymes and is directly involved in the biosynthesis of growth regulators such as auxin which promotes production of more plant cells and biomass that will be stored in the plant organs especially in seeds and their deficiencies may be one of the important reasons of poor yields in light textured soils (Singh and Raj, 2001). Keeping this in view a study was conducted on effect of zinc and sulphur on growth and yields of clusterbean.

One of the most important factors for carotenoids production is salt; it is therefore important to evaluate the influence of this element on the growth and the capacity of the microalgal cells to the accumulation of carotenoids. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate cell growth and carotenoids production in native Moroccan strains of Dunaliella spp. under laboratory conditions in the presence of a salt stress regime and their ability to produce large cellular and pigment biomass. This can be a source of antioxidant compounds.
