Cell Of an Ovary

Ebook "Adult stem cells (Second edition)" takes a critical look at issues concerning the developmental or differentiation potential for a variety of tissue types and for specific adult stem cell types. Since the first edition appeared a decade ago, our understanding of adult stem cells, and more specifically tissue-specific adult stem cells, has advanced tremendously. And an increased interest in regenerative medicine and potential stem cell applications has driven a quest for better understanding of stem cell biology.

Microgravity has been shown to markedly affect reproduction in humans and animals, especially reproductive organs such as the ovaries. Granulosa cells are one of the important components of the ovary, playing an important role in supporting oocyte maturation and fertilization. However, the effects of microgravity on granulosa cells have not been well characterized.

Changes in transcellular bioelectrical patterns are known to play important roles during developmental and regenerative processes. The Drosophila follicular epithelium has proven to be an appropriate model system for studying the mechanisms by which bioelectrical signals emerge and act.

During development of recombinant monoclonal antibodies in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, C-terminal amidated species are observed. C-terminal amidation is catalysed by peptidylglycine α-amidating monooxygenase (PAM), an enzyme known to be expressed in CHO cells.

An experiment was conducted to compare the efficacy of serum gonadotropin @50 and 100IU/ml, estrodiol-17β @0.5 and 1μg/ml, EBS @5 and 10% and BFF @5 and 10% supplementation on in vitro cytoplasmic maturation rate of buffalo oocytes. Ovaries were collected from buffaloes slaughtered at local abattoir. Oocytes were aspirated and good and excellent quality oocytes were matured in basic maturation media TCM199 supplementing above mentioned supplements separately.

The objective of our study was to identify the associations between the tests that used in ovarian reserve assessment: Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and antral follicle count (AFC) and to distinguish the most reliable markers for ovarian reserve in order to select an adequate strategy for the initial stages of infertility treatment and identify the effect of vitamin D on the ovarian reserve and its correlation with AMH. Anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) is expressed only in the gonads. In female it’s secreted by adult granulosa cells of the ovary.

In avian species, an egg envelope homologous to the mammalian zona pellucida is called the perivitelline membrane. We have previously reported that one of its components, a glycoprotein homologous to mammalian ZPC, is synthesized in the granulosa cells of the quail ovary. In the present study, we investigated the proteolytic cleavage of the newly synthesized ZPC and the secretion of ZPC from the granulosa cells. Western blot analysis of the cell lysates demonstrated that the 43-kDa protein is the precursor of mature ZPC (proZPC), and is converted to the 35-kDa protein before secretion. ...

GM-CSF is one of several naturally occurring glycoproteins that regulate leukocyte production, migration and function. It has been produced in different cell types, with different properties that depend on the production process used. The purpose of this work was to characterize the recombinant human GM-CSF from an engineered Chinese hamster ovary cell line grown in suspension and as adherent culture for the identification of the glycosylation sites and the defi-nition of the glycosidic moiety, including the degree of site occupancy....

We have shown that hormone-induced downregulation of luteinizing hor-mone receptor (LHR) in the ovary is post-transcriptionally regulated by an mRNA binding protein. This protein, later identified as mevalonate kinase (MVK), binds to the coding region of LHR mRNA, suppresses its transla-tion, and the resulting ribonucleoprotein complex is targeted for degrada-tion.

Liver receptor homolog-1 (LRH-1; NR5A2) is an orphan member of the nuclear receptor superfamily, mainly expressed in endoderm-derived tissues and in the ovary. In ovarian granulosa and luteal cells, LRH-1 regulates the expression of genes associated with ovarian steroidogenesis.

This development of egg cells occurs within the ovary once a month. One mature egg cell is released from one of the ovaries. The ovaries con- tain follicles. A follicle is a hollow bundle of cells with an egg inside. The follicle helps the egg mature. As the egg matures, the follicle enlarges and fills with fluid. The greatly enlarged follicle moves to the edge of the ovary and bursts, releasing the egg and the fluid. This event is ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary. (See Figure 17-4.

Women usually produce one mature egg per menstrual cycle. Because IVF is so expensive, current clinical practice is to give women hormonal drugs to stimulate multiple eggs in one cycle, to increase their chances of pregnancy. For this process, women inject three different hormones over the course of four to six weeks to “shut down” their ovaries, “hyperstimulate” them, and to control the timing that the mature eggs will be released.
