This research employs a novel third-order shear deformation theory to investigate the static buckling and static bending behaviors of organic nanoplates, marking the first instance of such an approach being used. The formulas are computed using strain gradient theory to consider the impact of the size effect, where this size effect parameter is considered in both positive and negative cases.

In this research, the structural and electronic properties of N-doped anatase TiO2 layers were evaluated using the density functional theory (DFT). The results show that doping positions of N atoms cause different effects on the size and shape of unit cells of models.

Chapter 3 - Cells: The living units (part a). Just as bricks and timbers are the structural units of a house, cells are the structural units of all living things, from one-celled “generalists” like amoebas to complex multicellular organisms such as humans, dogs, and trees. The human body has 50 to 100 trillion of these tiny building blocks. This chapter focuses on structures and functions shared by all cells.

Cellular manifestations of aging are most pronounced in postmitotic cells, such as neurons and cardiac myocytes. Alterations of these cells, which are responsible for essential functions of brain and heart, are particularly important contributors to the overall aging process. Mitochondria and lysosomes of postmitotic cells suffer the most remarkable age-related alterations of all cellular organelles.

Cold shock proteins (CSPs) form a family of highly conserved bacterial proteins capable of single-stranded nucleic acid binding. They are suggested to act as RNA chaperones during cold shock inhibiting the formation of RNA secondary structures, which are unfavourable for transcription and translation.

The classical metabolic control theory [Kacser, H. & Burns, J.A. (1973)Symp.Soc.Exp.Biol. 27, 65–104; Heinrich, R. & Rapoport, T. (1974)Eur. J. Biochem.42, 89–95.] does not take into account experimental evidence for correlations between enzyme concentrations in the cell. We investigated the implications of two causes of linear correlations: competition between enzymes, which is a mere physical adaptation of the cell to the limitation of resources and space, and regulatory correlations, which result from the existence of regulatory networks....

The study of protein aggregation saw a renaissance in the last decade, when it was discovered that aggregation is the cause of several human dis-eases, making this field of research one of the most exciting frontiers in science today. Building on knowledge about protein folding energy land-scapes, determined using an array of biophysical methods, theory and simulation, new light is now being shed on some of the key questions in protein-misfolding diseases.

The newly emerging field of systems biology involves a judicious interplay between high-throughput ‘wet’ experimentation, computational modelling and technology development, coupled to the world of ideas and theory. This interplay involves iterative cycles, such that systems biology is not at all confined to hypothesis-dependent studies, with intelligent, principled, hypothesis-generating studies being of high importance and consequently very far from aimless fishing expeditions.

Current theories agree that there appears to be no unique feature responsi-ble for the remarkable heat stability properties of hyperthermostable pro-teins. A concerted action of structural, dynamic and other physicochemical attributes are utilized to ensure the delicate balance between stability and functionality of proteins at high temperatures.

The theory of neurohumoral transmission received direct experimental validation nearly a century ago (see von Euler , 1981 ), and extensive investigation during the ensuing years led to its general acceptance. Nerves transmit information across most synapses and neuroeffector junctions by means of specific chemical agents known as neurohumoral transmitters or, more simply, neurotransmitters.

The closed engine test cell system makes a suitable case for students to study an example of the flow of heat and change in entropy. In almost all engine test cells the vast majority of the energy comes into the system as highly concentrated ‘chemical energy’ entering the cell via the smallest penetration in the cell wall, the fuel line. It leaves the cell as lower grade heat energy via the largest penetrations: the ventilation duct, engine exhaust pipe and the cooling water pipes.
