Cellulose degree of substitution

In this work, cellulose was successfully extracted from pineapple leaf waste by 0.75 M NaOH at 90oC and 5 M HNO3 at 70oC for 1.5h and 5h, respectively. The obtained cellulose fibres, with average diameters of 150-300 nm, were converted to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by esterification.

This study aimed to elucidate how the glass transition temperature and water interactions in cellulose esters are affected by the structures of their side chains. Cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate with three fractions of butyrates, all having the same total degree of substitution, were selected, and hot-melt pressed.

Pectin and cellulose were successfully extracted from passion fruit peel waste. The maximum pectin yield of the process was 12.60% at pH=2 for 1.5 h. The pure cellulose obtained from the passion fruit peel waste was prepared by refluxing of the passion fruit peel powder with 1 M NaOH and 1.25 M HNO3 solutions at 90°C for 1 h and 1.5 h, respectively. The passion fruit peel cellulose was converted to carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by etherification. The pure cellulose was soaked in a mixed solution of isopropyl alcohol and NaOH for 1.5 h.

New approaches to tailor-made cellulose/starch/lignin-synthetic polymer graft copolymers with precise control over molecular weight, degree of substitution, backbone-graft linkage, and the overall grafting process are being studied. Cross-linked graft copolymers with exactly defined polymer chain segments between crosslink points have been prepared. The graft copolymers exhibit a two-phase morphology and can function effectively as compatibilizers/interfacial agents to alloy cellulosic and lignocellulosic materials with synthetic polymers.
