Though light as a feather, with the vast quantities of chickens produced annually, the number of feathers produced is considerable. Research has shown that the feathers have hydrophobic properties and can therefore be used to make products that absorb oil.

We derived a protein hydrolysate with rich content, which includes proteinogenic and nonproteinogenic amino acids, from chicken feathers by using an alkaline hydrolysis procedure with high yield success. After foliar application of aqueous solutions (0.05%, 0.075%, and 0.1%) of chicken feather protein hydrolysate (CFPH) to the seedlings of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Altındane’ and ‘Bezostaya’), their effects were evaluated on important physiological and biochemical parameters.

Early feathering and late feathering in chickens are sex-linked phenotypes, which have commercial application in the poultry industry for sexing chicks at hatch and have important impacts on performance traits. However, the genetic mechanism controlling feather development and feathering patterns is unclear. Here, miRNA and mRNA expression profiles in chicken wing skin tissues were analysed through high-throughput transcriptomic sequencing, aiming to understand the biological process of follicle development and the formation of different feathering phenotypes.

A strain of Leghorn chickens (rd/rd), unable to produce a functional riboflavin-binding protein, lays riboflavin-deficient eggs, in which all embryos suddenly die at mid-incubation (days 13-15). This malady, caused by riboflavin deficiency, leads to excessive lipid accumulation in liver, impaired β-oxidation of lipid, and severe hypoglycemia prior to death.

Yellow-feathered chickens (YFCs) have a long history in China. They are well-known for the nutritional and commercial importance attributable to their yellow color phenotype. Currently, there is a huge paucity in knowledge of the genetic determinants responsible for phenotypic and biochemical properties of these iconic chickens.

Growth performance is significant in broiler production. In the growth process of broilers, gene expression varies at different growth stages. However, limited research has been conducted on the molecular mechanisms of muscle growth and development in yellow-feathered male chickens.

The chick embryos of Namakkal chicken variety was collected sequentially from day 1 to day 20 and gross morphological developmental features were studied. On day one of development, head fold and neural fold were observed. From second to fifth day, gradual development of optic vesicle, limb, wing buds, circulation and body flexures were viewed. From day 6 to day 12, clear demarcation of toes, development of scales on the legs, feather germ development, formation of eyelid and its closure were observed. From 13th day to 20th day, growth of various developed body parts was noticed.

The results showed no significant different between groups in performance parameters such as body weight and FCR. However, the present work showed highest dose of lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan supplementation for 42 days may be improved feed intake and immune response of chicken against Gumboro disease vaccination.

Poultry farming is the practice of raising poultry, chicken, turkeys, ducks etc. as an important subcategory of animal husbandry for the production of eggs, meat, feather, etc. Kadaknath is an important Indian poultry breed which has black meat, slow growth rate, smaller body size as well as late sexual maturity. For the increment in the growth of these birds certain feed additives are added to the ration or germination may also increased the nutritive value of maize and other cereals which are main component of the poultry ration.

Caecal coccidiosis was diagnosed in Rajasri birds of nineteen weeks age presented for routine postmortem examination at Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary Science, Hyderabad. Clinically birds showed inappetence, depression, ruffled feathers, bloody diarrhea, anemia and mortality of about 21 birds out of 65 birds (32.3%) for a period of two weeks. Grossly, extremely ballooned caeca, white necrotic foci visible from outside of caeca, haemorrhagic enteritis, watery ingesta mixed with mucus and blood were observed.

The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of four amino acids (lysine, methionine, threonine and tryptophan) supplementation on growth performances and serum antibody titers to Gumboro disease (IBD, infectious bursal disease) in broiler chickens. Chicks were randomly assigned to 5 dietary groups (5 chicks/group as 12 replicates of 5 chicks) in a complete randomised experimental design. Group I served as control group, was fed a diet without any supplementation.

Seven alleles of the chicken melanocortin (MC) 1 receptor were cloned into expression vectors, expressed in mam-malian cells and pharmacologicallycharacterized. Four of the clones e +R ,e +B&D ,e wh /e y ,E Rfayoumi gave receptors to which melanocortin stimulating hormone (a-MSH) and NDP-MSH bound with similar IC50values and responded toa-MSHbyincreasing intracellular cAMP levels in a dose-dependent manner.

Bird characteristics: Body always covered with feathers; feet (toes and usually tarsometatarsus) covered with scales (thickened skin). Aquatic birds have webbed toes. No teeth; horny beak. Lightweight skeleton in flying birds (many hollow bones), with keel on sternum for attachment of flight muscles (pectoral muscles). No keel in large flightless birds (ostrich, emu, rhea). Completely bony ribs (no rib cartilage). Clavicles fused into single bone, the furculum (wishbone). Numerous neck vertebrae (number varies by species) provide great neck flexibility.
