Water deficit is one of the major abiotic stresses which adversely affect the crop growth and yield. Moisture stress induce the metabolic functions, such as reduced synthesis of photosynthetic pigments, accumulation of osmoprotectants like proline, decline in the Chlorophyll stability and alterations in physiological parameters. The Field experiment was conducted at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai during summer season 2016 with the variety of SVPR - 4.

Physiological traits play an important role in crop growth and development. Comparative investigation on small millets, with respect different physiological traits such as leaf area index, leaf area duration, specific leaf weight, chlorophyll content, gas exchange parameters etc. and their relationship with grain yields were meager, and will be useful in small millets improvement.

Among the crops that feed human beings, Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the second most important cool season crop in India. A drastic reduction in wheat production was observed due to increasing temperature. It has been estimated that global mean temperature is rising at 0.3% per decade which may cause 50% decline in wheat yields in South Asia by 2050. High temperature above than optimum has drastic effect on chlorophyll content which is also reflected by normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI).
