CO2 emissions in Vietnam

The lack of country-specific greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factors vehicles in Vietnam makes the emissions inventory in the transport sector more difficult. This study developed the country-specific GHG emission factor in terms of CO2 equivalent for motorcycles (MCs) in Hanoi to overcome the above impediment.

The swine farming has a significant potential for biogas emissions and is a substantial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions within Vietnam's agricultural sector. This study was conducted to determine the total amount of CH4, and CO2 (eq) released from mature management activities and emission coefficients of CH4 and CO2 (eq) at different swine farms in Northern, Central and Southern regions, using tier 1 and tier 2 according to IPCC method.

Based on the above practice, this author conducted a study on the experience of several countries around the world in term of using Carbon taxes to reduce CO2 emissions and promote the sustainable development of enterprises. On this basis, this article proposes a number of suggestions for issuing Carbon tax, thus ensuring the sustainable development of Vietnamese enterprises.

This paper explores the nexus between financial development, economic growth and environmental sustainability in Vietnam from 1990 to 2020. By applying Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) and Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (DOLS) approaches, some main results are given as follows: (i) a compelling evidence to affirm that financial development contributes positively to environmental sustainability in Vietnam; (ii) a positive association is observed between economic growth, CO2 emissions, and ecological footprint, resulting in a deterioration of environmental quality.

The study "Effect of energy consumption and economic growth on environmental degradation in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand" empirically investigates the impact of energy consumption (electricity consumption) and economic growth (in terms of annual Gross Domestic Product growth rate) on the environmental degradation in form of CO2 emissions. The study aims to identify the interrelationship among the three variables namely, GDP growth rate, electricity consumption & CO2 emissions.

The article aims to explore the causal relationship between economic growth, industrialization, and urbanization in Vietnam between 1987 and 2016 using the VECM. In the short run, it has been empirically found that CO2 emissions have positive effect on GDP, while industry value added, and urban population have negative relationships with GDP. Results also indicated that CO2 emissions and urban population negatively affect industry value added, but an increase of GDP may enhance the industry value added.

The surging rate of CO2 emission in the past few years has raised concerns on environmental security for the government and Vietnamese citizens. Rising demands for social development, economic and population growth, enhancing standards of living require the use of energy and possibly increasing carbon dioxide emission, having direct impacts on the environment and human health. Hence, it is necessary to have different analyses assessing the degree of influences on each factor causing CO2 emitted and appropriate approaches to effectively control and reduce the carbon emission.

This paper presents the methodology adopted by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for countries to carry out emission inventories. The three tier approach for glass industry was briefly described with their formulae for CO2 emissions based on data of total production output or on the input carbonate consumption. Application of the method for flat glass manufacturing in Vietnam, the total emissions each year from 2010 to 2015 were estimated. Results show that the industry will emit nearly 200 thousand tons of CO2 in the year 2020.

Research on landfill gases (LFGs) collection mainly consisting of CH4 and CO2 gases, is not only a solution to decrease environmental risks but also to utilize and generate an alternative clean power source of coal. Many typical landfill cases in Vietnam, which install a recovery system and remove captured CH4 by the flaring methods, are able to contribute to reducing significantly greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with roughly 0.25 tCO2–eq/tons being equivalent to 7.8 million tons of CO2–eq/year.

This study tests the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) while examining the role of renewable energy sources and FDI to potentially effect the amount of CO2 emissions in Vietnam. Using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach, the relationship between CO2 emissions and GDP, FDI and sources of energy consumption has been investigated during 1980-2018 in Vietnam. The results of study reveal that there is non-existence EKC for Vietnam in long run and a sign of inverted U- shape in short run in this period.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions, foreign direct investment (FDI), income per capita and energy consumption (EC) in the capital of Vietnam from 1990 to 2015. The empirical results indicate that EC is a major contributor of environmental degradation while FDI marginally contribute to the current status. Moreover, a one-way causality is found to be running from carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions, EC, FDI to income in the long-run.

This study aims to develop WIO model that is expanded from Vietnam's IO tables in order to obtain data sets for quantifying certain environmental burdens of the economy. With a topdown approach, the country’s waste management and treatment capacity as well as its energy requirements and CO2 emissions can be evaluated.

The rapid increase in emissions of major greenhouse gases such as CO2 and CH4 in the last decade has seriously affected the climate change and the living environment in the world in general and in Vietnam in particular. In addition, the demand for effective use of CO2 - rich natural gas has promoted studies to find new, highly active and stable catalysts for the methane reforming process. NiO has proven to be the most suitable catalyst for industrial application of the reforming process.

The results indicate that the economic growth, energy consumption, financial development and trade openness positively influence the CO2 emissions, whereas foreign direct investment has a negative impact in the short term. Coefficient of joining ASEAN is not statistically significant. The findings of this study also support the validity of EKC and PHH in the Vietnamese economy.
