Nonpharmacologic interventions for asthma management rely on identifcation and mitigation of important asthma triggers. Cockroach exposure is strongly associated with asthma morbidity. It is also associated with stress, another risk factor for asthma. Despite high prevalence of both in vulnerable populations, the impact of joint exposure has not been examined.

A novel gram-negative bacterium, OG2, was isolated from the body microflora of cockroaches (Blatta orientalis). Based on morphological, biochemical, and 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis, the isolated strain OG2 was identified as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. This bacterial strain was screened for its α-cypermethrin-degrading potential with minimal salt medium (MSM).

The fumigant toxicity of various essential oils and selected monoterpenoid components were tested against the adult German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae). Responses varied according to plant material, concentration, and exposure time.

Sensitization to cockroach allergens is associated with the development of asthma. Bla g 1 is a German cockroach allergen that shows allergenic cross-reactivity with American cockroach allergen, Per a 1, and has a molecular structure composed of multiple tandem amino-acid repeats. Two consecutive repeats are not identical but form a duplex that constitutes a basic molecular unit of Bla g 1. By molecular mass, purified natural Bla g 1 would contain approximately two duplexes.

Two novel toxins, Lqh6 andLqh7, isolated from the venom of the scorpionLeiurus quinquestriatus hebraeus, have in their sequence amolecular signature (8Q/KPE10) associated with a recently defined group ofa-toxins that target Na channels, namely thea-like toxins [reviewed inGordon, D., Savarin, P.,Gurevitz,M.&Zinn-Justin, S. (1998)J. Toxicol. Toxin Rev.17, 131–159]. Lqh6 and Lqh7 are highly toxic to insects and mice, and inhibit the binding of a-toxins to cockroach neuronal membranes.

Tachykinins and tachykinin-related peptides (TKRPs) play major roles in signaling in the nervous system and intestine of both invertebrates and ver-tebrates. Here we have identified cDNAs encoding precursors of multiple TKRPs from the cockroachesLeucophaea maderaeandPeriplaneta ameri-cana. All nine LemTKRPs that had been chemically isolated in earlier experiments could be identified on the precursor ofL. maderae. Four previ-ously unidentified LemTKRPs were found in addition on the precursor.

Bacillus cereusisolated from the larvae of Myrmeleon bore was found to secrete proteins that paralyze and kill German cockroaches, Blattela germanica, when injected. One of these active proteins was purified from the culture broth ofB.cereususing anion-exchange and gel-filtration chro-matography. The purified toxin, with a molecular mass of 34 kDa, was identified as sphingomyelinase C (EC3.1.4.12) on the basis of its N-terminal and internal amino-acid sequences. A recombinant sphingomyelinase C expressed in Escherichia coliwas as potent as the native protein in killing the cockroaches....

During vitellogenesis, one of the most tightly regulated processes in ovipar-ous reproduction, vitellogenins are incorporated into the oocyte through vitellogenin receptor (VgR)-mediated endocytosis. In this paper, we report the cloning of the VgR cDNA from Blattella germanica, as well as the first functional analysis of VgR following an RNA interference (RNAi) approach.

Religions have too often been used to justify the violation of human rights, in part through the hierarchical and selective use of role ethics and the postponement of temporal justice to divine judgment or future karmic consequences. Yet the world religions have also provided a constant voice of critique against the violation of human rights by calling for equality, and universal compassion and love, calls which reach far beyond the mere protection of human rights.

When we thus contemplate the process of social hygiene, we are no longer in danger of looking upon it as an artificial interference with Nature. It is in the Book of Nature, as Campanella put it, that the laws of life and of government are to be read. Or, as Quesnel said two centuries ago, more precisely for our present purpose, "Nature is universal hygiene." All animals are scrupulous in hygiene; the elaboration of hygiene moves pari passu with the rank of a species in intelligence. Even the cockroach, which lives on what we call filth, spends the greater part of its time in the...

Some say that ‘the cockroach’ will be the last species on Earth to survive. Then it has been calculated that one gravid aphid, left to reproduce with zero mortality, will, after one year, cover the globe with an aphid layer over 140 km thick. Not forgetting too, that flies and fleas vector disease. So, why should we even consider conserving insects? Quite simply, without insects, the likelihood is that the world as we know it would be radically changed in a matter of days. Besides, it is only a tiny minority of insects that harm our lives.

Most available literature on cockroaches deals with domestic pests and the half dozen or so other species that are easily and commonly kept in laboratories and museums. It reflects the extensive efforts undertaken to find chinks in the armor of problematic cockroaches, and the fact that certain species are ideal for physiological and behavioral investigations under controlled conditions. These studies have been summarized in some excellent books, including those by Guthrie and Tindall (1968), Cornwell (1968),Huber et al. (1990), Bell and Adiyodi (1982a), and Rust et al. (1995).

Asthma is now the most common chronic childhood disease, occurring in approximately 54 of every 1000 children (21). From 1980 through 1996, childhood asthma increased dramatically, by approximately 5% per year (14, 16, 26). The etiology of asthma is complex and multifactorial; risk factors include genetic predisposition as well as exposure to environmental and infectious triggers.

Asthma is a major urban disease and a substantial burden from the standpoint of both the quality of life for the many suffering from the disease and the economics of health care. The global increase in the prevalence of asthma in the last half of the 20th century has affected urban communities in many countries disproportionately. Asthma is an allergic disease for more than 50% of adults and 80% of children. The evidence for a relations- hip between allergic asthma and domestic exposure to cockroaches, mice and dust mites is strong.

This web site is about much more than just French grammar. It is also about the epic love story of Tex and Tammy, two star-struck armadillos, and Bette, the sex kitten bent on destroying their love. In addition to this ménage à trois, the cast of characters include Edouard, a pretentious French snail, Joe-Bob, a dim-witted squirrel from College Station, and Corey, a cockroach who prefers getting high and watching the X-Files on TV to doing his French homework.
