Cognitive linguistic approach

This article explores the lexico-semantic network through a brief examination of the English preposition "in" and its equivalent "trong" in Vietnamese. Working within a cognitive linguistic framework, the investigation presents the six clusters of senses of the preposition "in" based on Tyler and Evans’ research, thereby, via the contrastive analysis approach, indicating the similarities and differences in the way speakers of the two languages conceptualize the world via their spatial configuration.

In general, this study aims to make an insight into an understanding of the role of cognitive linguistics in instruction on English as a foreign language through an investigation of how basic concepts in cognitive linguistics should be applied in a classroom of English as a foreign language.

Studying this thesis, that gets a lot of knowledge to understand more about the items of cognitive linguistics. Studying, applying, using cognitive linguistics is of large significance with us in dealing with numerous problems of linguistics that was not explained by classic theory. Especially with foreign language learners like me, cognitive linguistics opened a new view so that they can approach foreign language easier.

Teaching and learning English idioms has always been a challenge for both teachers and students. From the cognitive linguistics viewpoint, this paper discusses conceptual metaphor theory and proposes to apply it as an alternative approach to teaching English idioms. Through the conceptual metaphor analysis of example idioms, the author proves that idiom meanings are formed from conceptual metaphors rather than dogmatism and discusses some implications for language teaching.

This paper outlines the linguistic semantic commitments underlying an application which automatically constructs depictions of verbal spatial descriptions. This paper examines efficient predictive broadcoverage parsing without dynamic programming. In contrast to bottom-up methods, depth-first top-down parsing produces partial parses that are fully connected trees spanning the entire left context, from which any kind of non-local dependency or partial semantic interpretation can in principle be read. We contrast two predictive parsing approaches, topdown and left-corner parsing, and find both to be viable.
